2001 civic lx
I own a honda civic lx 2001. I have a whining sound coming from transmission and the car will not move in any gear. Actually it almost wants to move when i put it in gear. Reverse or forward doe the same thing. It will barely move if anything and fluid level was low i added some to correct level but still no bueno.
Re: 2001 civic lx
How would you like to change the transmission? Auto transmission failures are very common on the '01 and I believe some '02s before the internal filter was enlarged.
Before jumping to replacing the trans it would be a good idea to drain and fill the transmission with new Honda fluid. Owner's manual recommends three drain and fills allowing it to reach operating temperature in between.

Check the inner CV axles to make sure they didn't pop out of the differential. Only one of the two front axle provides power (I think it's passenger side but not sure).
Also, as BC replied do an ATF drain and fill. Valvoline Max life is much cheaper than Honda ATF and is a suitable fluid. Walmart sells it for $18 a gallon https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline...-1-GA/15125768.
You may want to try a can of this first in the current ATF before doing a drain and fill https://www.walmart.com/ip/Trans-Tune/30391239
If it's not the CV axle popped out then the transmission is
probably shot. If you try the Transtune you do so at your own risk. It's a last resort item before full replacement. If you end up replacing the transmission it's probably best to go with years '04 and '05 if they are compatible with your car's ECU and chassis fitment. Others here may be able to answer that for you.
