found the problems. she got hot. give me your take on my plan

engine was rough, hard starting, gasses coming out of radiator. going through oil and coolant like mad. i found the plastic crank case to be broken, the cyllinders were rusted up front so im guessing that one was non functional. spun two bearings but crank looks good.
so, thinking of honing, decking, new rings, new gaskets, new lower bearings/journals, and back together.

also had an ear break off bell housing. gonna try to weld that back on.
here are some photos of what im dealing with.

i cant find another engine for less than like 1200 or so shipped. most are closer to 2K. the rebuild looks to be around 4-500. so im going that route.
the trans bell housing im going to weld tomorrow, see how i do

It would cost me $300-400 just at the machine shop for this work. Block checked and decked if needed, cylinders checked and honed or bored depending how bad it is, crank checked and fixed if necessary, head checked for flatness and no valves leak. New rings, rod bearings, probably new rods, maybe new pistons.

You could also go to a pick your part junkyard and pull a decent short block for like $200.

Have you rebuilt an engine before?

machine shop is below 400, just. for the head and a decking. crank and pistons themselves look good. ive only ever rebuilt diesels so this little guy is new to me, so are spark plugs...
im reusing as much as i can. the seal/bearing kit was a hundred bucks. we will see when i try to start it but it looks like around 500 or so for everything. not counting some time in the garage.

i cant find an engine for this car for less than 900. local salvage yards want over a grand and everything out of my city has shipping. i did find an ebay engine for around 800 but no idea if its good or has any problems.
