2005 Honda Civic EX Speedo

My daughter's 2005 Honda civic Speedometer is working intermittently. It stays at "0" and once and a while it will jump up to speed. Most of the time it is at "0". I thought maybe the Speed sensor control on the engine but I talked to a local repair shop and they mentioned the instrument cluster. They would have to get the cluster from Honda and install it an return to Honda to have them program it. Does this sound right? Or any other ideas?
Thanks

Check fuses #4 (10A) and #10 (7.5A) in the Under-Dash Fuse/Relay Box and #9 (10A) in the Under-Hood Fuse/Relay Box.
Possibly the gauge assembly, open in the wire between PCM and gauge assembly, short in the ground circuit or a bad PCM. Maybe a loose connection in the back of the gauge assembly? Any work done in that area lately?
Do you have a CEL on with P0720 code for a fault in the Countershaft Speed Sensor?

Ok, I'll check the fuses. No work has been done on the dash . I had it serviced (oil change etc) 185K maintenance before Christmas this problem started Friday January 31st. My daughter did not mention a Check Engine light (CEL)

Get some OBD2 scanner or BT module, does it read correct speed?

Speed is at "0' when I had a chance to drive it last night. The car is home today so I will check the fuses listed above.

Re: 2005 Honda Civic EX Speedo

If you need an instrument cluster assembly, I have one laying around. I initially bought it for a gauge cluster swap in my 2002, but that never happened.

I believe it came from a 2004 ex sedan MT. Blue rings (I think coupes had red) and no AT gear selection indicators. IIRC, the only thing that would need to be programmed would be mileage to reflect the correct ODO reading. Should be plug and play otherwise.

I drove the car again. It appears the odometer, trip odometers and all gauges work except for the speedometer. See picture below.

Do all gauges sweep properly when doing a self diagnostic?

Yes, I ran this test last night. All gauges sweep except for the speedometer.
Thanks

Re: 2005 Honda Civic EX Speedo

That points to a bad cluster I believe.

Re: 2005 Honda Civic EX Speedo

If you pull one from a junkyard maybe $40 or so. At least that's what I can get them for at my local yard. Also....
