Tapping sound on my 2005 Honda Civic LX

Hey there, I just recently bought a 2005 Honda Civic LX and I was wondering if anybody may know what the tapping sound coming from my motor is when I wrap it up the tapping noise gets a little bit louder, I tried holding my finger against the purge valve and I do not feel the same sound when I hold my finger against it. I don’t know if there’s multiple other purge vowels or maybe there is only one. If anyone could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated

Re: Tapping sound on my 2005 Honda Civic LX

If you can, post a video. Depending on how loud it is, it could be normal or it could be as bad as rod knock.

here are a couple of videos from my 2002 civic.
In this video:
, skip to the 11s mark and you can hear what normal tapping sounds like

In this video, you can hear what rod knock sounds like:
. Fix for that one was a bottom end engine swap (I had a spare engine laying around)

Re: Tapping sound on my 2005 Honda Civic LX

Sounds normal to me. Could probably use a valve lash adjustment. Pretty easy to do if you're mechanically savvy and have a set of feeler gauges and probably takes 30-60min.
  1. Start with the engine cold
  2. Pull valve cover and upper timing belt cover. I'd recommend pulling spark plugs, too, so you're not fighting compression strokes for the rest of this procedure
  3. Set engine to TDC
  4. Measure clearance between valve stem and rocker (exhaust .009-.011"/.23-.27mm; intake .007-.009"/.18-.22mm) on cylinder 1 (closest to timing belt). Adjust as needed (loosen nut, turn the adjusting screw with a flathead, torque the nut to 14ft-lb)
  5. Rotate crank 180* degrees (counterclockwise)
  6. Repeat on cylinder 3 (making sure cylinder 3 piston is at the highest point of travel -- this can easily be done by sticking a dowel down the spark plug tube and watching it rise/fall. It should be 180 rotation of the crank pulley, however. I personally have the long bar from a broken plastic hanger in my tool box for that reason)
  7. Rotate crank 180
  8. Repeat on 4
  9. Rotate crank 180
  10. Repeat on 2
  11. Put everything back together.
I have a PDF of the procedure somewhere. If you're down to try it yourself, I'll upload it.
