There is a timing mark on the oil pump as well, you can see in the pic above. The arrow should line up with the line on the crank sprocket. The post you linked is checking timing with the lower timing cover and crankshaft pulley still installed.

If the camshaft sprocket marks are lined up to TDC then the line on the crank sprocket should match up with the arrow on the oil pump.

It's the same on all D17 engines. It's a bit inconvenient but you have to make it work. You could try using a permanent marker to extend the arrow or something.
