Engine Swap

Hi guys. First thanks for everyone’s previous help and tips on my other posts. Well here’s my latest project I need some advice on. 2005 Civic VP D17A1 5 spd manual transmission I have the all dreaded rod knock thanks to my lovely gf and her selective hearing. Is it possible to remove both engine and transmission from the top utilizing an a-frame and chain hoist or does it have to come out from below? Will be going back with same engine.

Re: Engine Swap

If you're removing both at the same time they will easily come out the top.

Re: Engine Swap

Thanx, yeah they are both coming out as the clutch is beginning to feel a little suspect and with 250k miles on it and with engine out I figure now is as good a time as any.

Re: Engine Swap

I took engine/tranny out as an assembly in my 2002. In my dad's garage with a cherry picker from harbor freight. Put it in as an assembly the same way it came out.

Re: Engine Swap

Cool, y’all are making my day. I was a little concerned that I was gonna have to figure out how to get it up high enough to drop it out from below, my buddy has an engine stand, a-frame hoist, and floor space for me to use but no lift.

Re: Engine Swap

I’ll be sure to post pics and updates as it progresses, most likely to get started next weekend as there are other projects to finish up so that I can devote my time to getting this done as quickly but, properly, as possible. This will be my most ambitious project to date.

You just mean like a two post car lift, right? Not a big deal. As long as you have an engine hoist or cherry picker you can use to lift it out the top you're good to go.
