D17A2 engine oil problem - help wanted please.

I wonder if anyone may be able to help?
The car is a 2006 HONDA FRV V-TEC D17A2 1.7 petrol engine, my daughter said the engine started to make a knocking noise. No oil light came on. We did a check and the piston at the pulley wheel end had movement, suggesting a spun big end bearing. We stripped the bottom out and sure enough the shells had spun. There was no damage or scoring on the other three bearings. We replaced all shell bearings and cleaned up the crank journal and the big ends. We checked the journal diameter and it was within spec. Checked that the oil ways were clear with an extra long pipe cleaner and all was ok. Replaced the oil filter and oil.
Rebuilt the bottom end and fired her up, the oil pressure light came on when you turned the ignition switch and went off once pressure had built up. All was fine for around 10 minutes then again the noise returned. I stripped down again and the big end bearing shells at the flywheel end had a lot of oil and were fine, but the big end at the pulley end where the problem is had play and there was not a lot of oil on the shell bearings. I tried to check oil flow to the bearings by rigging up a temporary sump to pump oil to the crank journals but this did not work as the crank bearing support frame is removed. Anyone know how to check oil flow and how to clean the oil ways.
Finally if all else fails, will any D17A2 engine run in the FR-V or does it need the ECU as well, I would move all sensors over to the replacement engine.
Thanks in advance Dave.

Thanks in advance Dave

Really need a actual oil pressure reading to figure out if it’s a blockage, or simply worn out oil pump.

You should be able to easily replace the entire bare block with another D17.

I think the oil pressure is ok to the other three journals as there was plenty of oil around the bearings when I stripped the big end caps off, only one did not have as much oil. I think when the oil got low sludge was drawn up and has blocked an oil way. I shall do an engine flush and replace the oil and filter and see what happens then. Thanks again.

I think that will be my last resort as my daughter finds the car really useful. Thanks again.

Re: D17A2 engine oil problem - help wanted please.

Once I used shop air line to blow out a main bearing oil hole..

Shop supervisor told me to clean up off the clock or consider myself fired..

Just thinking about that mess again give me shivers.

Thanks, I think I would need to do that outside or cover the engine. Depends if the engine flush works or not. Cheers
