Catalytic converter heat shield?

Hey guys,

As of late, I've been hearing a very faint humming noise coming from my car when over 2k rpms and doing 40mph+. I brought it into Honda this morning. They checked it out and are informing me that the catalytic converter heat shield needs to be replaced.

I'm tight for cash (they want 190 or so for it), so I asked about leaving it on until I can afford it. They said it will cause no harm leaving it on there besides being annoyed by the sound.

Is this accurate? Should I treat this issue as soon as possible (read: credit card) or can I actually go a month or two to fix it?

**** it. Its a piece of thin sheet metal, its definitely not worth $190.
What the heck could be "wrong" with a piece of metal? Its rattling?
Just take it off, OR, if you look at it, there should be a big rust spot where the cat was rattling against it, take a dremel and cut a big hole around the rub spot.

Well, they said exactly what you said.

After time, it gets rusted/warped... and that'll cause it to make a humming noise.

They just called back and said they put some kind of screw/bolt on it (for free) and it should help with the noise.
