alternator whine (non-stereo)

does everybody else's alternator whine really loud or it just mine. I'm not talking about through the stereo, all thats gone (and it was a pain to get rid of), but the alternator just whines really loud under the hood, you can hear it real good inside the car. I was just wondering, and it might be because its strained so much from audio equipment. (~1800 watts). If this needs to go to ICE move it, but i think its just more of a general problem/question.

this happened to me in february, whenever i stepped on the accelerator it got even louder. The alternator bearing is messed up. i think you can take the alternator to get rebuilt or you can get a new or used one. I got a used one from a local junk yard that had a 2002 civic (i have a 2001). it cost me $80. that noise was so annoying, i was glad i finally got rid of it. it might be cuz of the system cuz im pushin about 1200 watts. hope this helps.

i thought it was the power steering pump too until i replaced it with a new pump, when i turned the car on, it still made the noise. i was so pissed, its a good thing they took back the pump in exchange for the altenator.

My alternator bearing went as well. The dealer replaced it for free. It is close enough to the power steering pump that some people think thats what it is, but its usually the alternator.
