Question Bought A New Starter, still doesnt work.

Honda Civic 2004 DX Manual, Started out with a near dead battery, was getting it to click but not enough power. Put on the jumper cables (in the correct positions) and it started.

Came back the next day, wouldn't go past a single click. Checked Battery Fuse (Good), Checked 40 amp Ignition fuse (Good). Checked battery terminal connections (Good). Swapped the battery out for a good one and still a single click. SO! I took the starter out and ran a test on the solenoid and starter and it wasn't operating at all. Went to Autozone and they tested it with the same failed results. So I bought a Refurbished Starter for 110$ from Autozone and installed it nice and easily and CAR STARTS RIGHT UP!!! YES! We did it!

...I run the car around the neighborhood for 10 minutes and come back. Shut the vehicle off and come back to start it up again 5 minutes later and, LOW AND BEHOLD, SINGLE CLICK. I then try again and it starts. Now I'm on edge. I run it for 5 minutes in my driveway, turn it off, come back 5 minutes later and its flat out gone. Single clicks and nothing more. The battery is good, headlights are strong, both fuses look good, sanded down the battery terminals for a good connection made zero difference.

ANY IDEAS? Thanks guys

Did you get the alternator tested for voltage and amperage under start-up and under load? Make sure the alternator belt tension is adjusted correctly and the alternator's fasteners and connections are secure.

Check all chassis, engine and starter connections.
I prefer used Honda oem starters over aftermarket ones.

Re: Bought A New Starter, still doesnt work.

As of this morning it is running again, I checked for continuity between positive and negative terminals, checked out good. I did have 2 grounding screws that were not tight. One was the negative battery terminal cable screw that attaches to the transmission, and the other ground screw was near the top of the engine. I also unplugged my starter connections and placed them back in.
I read that if you put your car into 5th gear it can help move the starter, which may help it turn on. I did that too. My alternator belt is tensioned well, if the car decides to not start up again in 10 minutes I will run an alternator test with my multimeter.

As of 5 minutes ago, it runs now. As of 10 minutes from now, that may not be the case. Will update.

Update: 1hr later turned it on. Started quick. Decided to run a voltage test. Used my multimeter, one line on positive terminal of battery and one line on negative through out all these tests.
  • + to - : 12.65V
  • + to - (with car turned turned on) : 14.47V
  • + to - (with Radio cranked, headlights, flashers, and sub woofer) : 13.50-12.92V (fluctuates when sub kicks in)
  • + to - (Turned car off) : 13.07V and dropping
So according to my knowledge, I believe these are optimal readings. The video I watched said I should look further into the alternator if these readings weren't good but they all seem good to me.

Any ideas? I think I'm going to drive it to town. (watch as it dies and I have to get it towed knowing my luck)
