synthetic vs regular engine oil
synthetic vs regular engine oil
I have Honda civic turbo 2018. I got oil filter changed and got synthetic oil. Do both types of oils need to be changed after same mileage or synthetic oil can be changed at higher mileage and the maintenance minder alerts us in context of regular oil or synthetic oil.
Re: synthetic vs regular engine oil
Synthetic is designed to last longer than conventional.
I can’t speak for the oil life metre in the 10th gen civics (in terms of accuracy, it probably assumes you’re using synthetic though), but my TSX has one. It’s pretty inaccurate so I don’t rely on it. I’ve done over 15k miles since I bought it and it’s telling me my oil life is still at 40%. I usually do an oil change every 5000kms. All synthetic oils are rated for more than that though.

Re: synthetic vs regular engine oil
I would use nothing full synth, especially if you're rocking the 1.5T. The 5 oil changes I've done on my car have averaged 7000 miles between changes. My first oil change was almost 8000 miles on the odometer with 5% left. Every other oil change has been 10-15% left on the maintenance minder. Pennzoil Platinum 0W20 (and more recently for the last 2 oil changes Pennzoil Ultra Platinum) and Purolator Boss filters (every other oil change) are what I've been using almost exclusively in my '18 sport hatch. I change early due to my aftermarket tune, just to make sure things are all hunky dory.
Re: synthetic vs regular engine oil
Use synthetic and change it between 5-10k miles. The minder will adjust the amount of miles based on driving style. More highway miles tend to lead to more miles between changes has been my experience. I tend to replace mine around 7500.

Re: synthetic vs regular engine oil
The Honda dealer should be using full synthetic 0w20.
The engine takes 0w20. Says so right on the oil cap. Use it. .
All 0w20 oil is considered semi-synthetic or better. There is no conventional 0w20 oil.
But there are typically several different versions of 0w20 available, they are not alike so you gotta read the labels now.
Pick a well known trusted oil brand,. Find the version of 0w20 that specifically names honda in its approved list on the labels if possible.
(used to see mobil-1 like this at my local walmart. it's NOT hard to find. )
The Maintenance minder system has no direct monitoring capability. It cannot "see" the physical conditions of anything.
It .was modeled around use of the correct specified fluids.
It's kinda like a mileage counter that varies the oil change interval based on your driving.
It's been on Hondas over 15yrs now. IMO It works ok for the majority of drivers, but it's not perfect.
I'd consider that minder a maximum for a typical appliance user oil change. . -.
Doing it right is easy and prices are not expensive.
What's the cost of doing it wrong?
(i got $torie$ hahaha)
