At a loss
At a loss
In May, we bought my nephew a 2017 Honda Civic for graduation. It has been one thing after another. Test drove great, drove 40 minutes home after purchase, great.
A few weeks later, drove an hour and half to give to him. Air stopped blowing cold air. Stopped. And got back in to start car, check engine light came on. Air worked again. First code at O’Reilys and Advance was P0340. Car cut off turning a parking lot. We ordered the camshaft position sensors and changed both the next day. Drove fine afterwards and no lights, no cutting off. Gave to nephew that evening - cut off on him driving home. Took to local mechanic, got P0714 code – CVT Fluid Temp Sensor Intermittent Failure. Mechanic recommended taking to Honda. On nephews ear home (less than 5 miles), car cut off and dash lights blinking D, check engine, etc. Towed to Honda Service Center.
▪ Honda got same code and recommended replacing Solenoid Wire Harness (valve body) and retest – agreed and approved
Honda also received code B1225 open in the incar temperature sensor circuit for AC.
unfortunately same issue happened a few days later - cut off and blinking dash D and check engine light came on. went back to Honda
Honda replaced transmission. $7000
next day, same issues - back to Honda
Honda said the issue was that one of theConnectors was Soft Set
✓ Honda corrected the soft set, found no further codes, but wanted to test drive more before releasing.
test drove- same issues
✓ Honda is now getting Code P0977 – Transmission Control Module, Shift Solenoid B Control Circuit High
replaced TCM - same issues.
how could this happen all in a matter of a few weeks? Could it be electrical? Certain wiring? Something else?
DETAILED TIMELINE OF EVENTS:
Timeline of Events:
• May 5, 2025
✓ Test drove the car – no issues, but we did notice the brakes may need to be repaired
• May 8, 2025
✓ Purchased the car and drove (40 minutes)– no issues
• May 13, 2025
✓ Drove car to tag and title office (40 minutes total) – no issues
• June 6, 2025
✓ The Air Conditioner(A/C) stopped blowing cold air intermittently during the drive for 1.5 hours
✓ When I started the car back up to go to O’Reilly’s, the Check Engine lightcame on
▪ O’Reilly’s checked the code and it came up P0340 – Camshaft Position Sensor
• Did not have part in stock, so went to AutoZone and the same code appeared – P0340
• AutoZone did not have part in stock so went to Advance Auto Parts and ordered for Saturday morning delivery
▪ At O’Reilly’s, we purchased R1234YF charging freon for the A/C
▪ On the way to eat that evening, the car shut offwhile turning into a parking lot
• Car started right back up and didn’t shut off again that evening
▪ Charged A/C
• June 7, 2025
✓ Replaced both Camshaft Position Sensors
✓ Drove car around town and on Hwy to test – no dash lights, no cutting off, A/C worked
✓ We gave the car to our nephew that afternoon
✓ On their drive home (1 hour), the car shut off, but started back up
• June 9 – 17, 2025
✓ Had car checked by local mechanic and local transmission specialist – no work was performed on the car, just assessments
✓ Mechanics received code P0714 – CVT Fluid Temp Sensor Intermittent Failure
▪ Both mechanics test drove the car (separately) but didn’t experience the previously described issues
✓ Transmission Specialist did not feel the transmission was bad, but recommended taking it to a Honda Service Center to run their Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) since Honda can have proprietary codes
✓ On the drive home (less than 5 miles), the Check Engine Light, Blinking D Light, and Brake Lightcame on
✓ In the meantime, we spoke with two Honda specialists who are friends – one has owned and worked on numerous Hondas and the other is a Mechanical Engineer who worked at the Honda plant at one time.
▪ It was mentioned that there could be something electrical causing the sensor issues, or there could be a loose wire, or a ground fault wire issue
• June 19, 2025
✓ Towed to Economy Honda Service Center
✓ We explained everything in detail to Honda Service Center as outlined above, as well as the possible issues mentioned by trusted friends
✓ We agreed to pay for HDS and A/C evaluations
✓ HDS found code P0714 – CVT Fluid Temp Sensor Intermittent Failure, Solenoid Wire Harness Failure or Transmission Fault
▪ Honda recommended replacing Solenoid Wire Harness (valve body) and retest – agreed and approved
✓ Honda stated that incorrect freon had been charged in A/C and found code B1225 open in the in car temperature sensor circuit
• Note: We charged with the correct freon stated in the summary (R1234YF) and verified that purchase with O’Reilly’s
• Honda recommended taking the car to an A/C shop to drain and recharge with the correct freon
✓ Honda checked brakes during the complimentary inspection and said no issues
• June 23, 2025
✓ Honda replaced Solenoid Wire Harnessand retested – no codes
• June 24, 2025
✓ Halen picked up his car
✓ Within a few days, the Check Engine Light was back on and D light blinking, etc.
✓ Car cut off 5 times on 6/29/25 when driving for 3 or so hours
• June 30, 2025
✓ Took car back to Economy Honda Service Center
✓ P0714 – CVT Fluid Temperature Sensor Intermittent Failure coded again
✓ Honda stated it was a transmission issue, and the full transmission needed to be replaced
✓ Honda Replaced Transmission
✓ I asked again about the brakes since the inspection found no issues
▪ Honda said front brakes (pads and rotors) needed to be replaced
✓ Honda Replaced front brake pads and rotors
• July 3, 2025
✓ Picked up car from Economy Honda
• July 4, 2025
✓ Check Engine Light, D Flashing Light and Brake Lightcame on again
• July 5, 2025
✓ Took car back to Economy Honda Service Center
• July 7, 2025
✓ Honda said the issue was that one of theConnectors was Soft Set
✓ Honda corrected the soft set, found no further codes, but wanted to test drive more before releasing
• July 8, 2025
✓ Honda test drove the car and had the same issues within minutes (Check Engine Light, D Flashing Light, etc.)
✓ Honda is calling Honda Tech Support
✓ Honda is now getting Code P0977 – Transmission Control Module, Shift Solenoid B Control Circuit High
• July 9, 2025
✓ Honda called and said they were advised by tech support to proceed with replacing the TCM
✓ He also mentioned that the mechanic found another wire that was faulty so they are replacing that one too
✓ Should be ready tomorrow after someone test drives it
✓ We discussed the crazy series of events that every time an issue is fixed based on the code, a new one appears… and could that be some overarching issue?
