17 inch tire size??
What tire size do I get for my 17s???
I don't really understand tire sizes. I know the first number is the .. uhh how do i say this... "low profileness" of the tire.. not sure about the second number and the third number is the rim size.
Should I get 205/45/17 or 215/45/17?? I think the 205/45/17 makes the wheels look a little small and out of proportion to the car, what do you think?
Second question, are Yokohama tires good quality?

No you're wrong about the first number. The first number is for the width of the tire. The second number is for the heighth. 205/45/17's are the almost direct replacement for stock tires as far as overall size goes. A lot of people get 205/40/17's because they want the tire to be lower profile (not as tall). I would not reccommend 215's. Most people have problems with rubbing and you will have to roll the wheels wells the make them fit. If you live in a place with very good roads and don't mind a harder ride, then 205/40/17's will be fine. But if you have potholes and not so great roads and want a little softer of a ride than the 40's I would go with 205/45/17's. Just remember the lower the the height of the tire (the middle number) the more of a chance you have with damaging your wheels with rough roads and potholes. Hope this helps.
No I would get Yok tires because they suck in rain and bad weather conditions, plus i've heard it rides really rough! wouldn't recommend it for everyday driving, maybe if u race alot.
i've got them..
Kuhmo 712's..
really fookin' close tho..i can't even fit a finger in there anymore
but not a single rub yet, and i take some fast corners
45's are .8% larger, 40's are 1.6% (i believe) smaller in OC (outer circumference..)
my OZ's would look better with 40's imo, but with the spendies they cost i went for the higher wall..
good stiff wall on the Kuhmo's too...

205-40-17 well if you have been to montreal and know how those roads are and yours are almost the same I wouldn't really suggest 205-40-17 i just dented my rim the other day
. The tires are a bit loud but nothing unbearable good tires IMO.

Use 205/40/17. That's the size you want. Take it from me, i've changed rims 5 out of the last 6 years. Yokohoma tires are all that i have used and they are amazing. I have 18 inch rims on right now and i am using the Yokohoma parada spec 2s and they are spectacular in the rain and dry weather. I am using 215/35 18s and the ride is still good even with lowering springs. I don't know where Blkcivic is getting his info from. I drive my car every day and these tires are quiet. I've had avid h4s, A520s, Parada spec 1s and now spec 2s and they have all been great. Go with Yokos
first off 215/45/17 is the closest to stock you can buy for 2002 civics lx's and up. there will be no problems with rubbing unless you drop your car more than 1.7".
heres a lesson in reading tire sizes. the first number(215) is the width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall. the second number(45) is the pecentage of the width from sidewall to sidewall which gives you the actual height of the sidewall. i think we all know what the last number is so i won't explain it. 205/45/17 will have a slightly lower sidewall than a 215/45/17, do the math.
jgreenway i suggest that you buy 215/40/17 if you are looking for a lower profile look. they look a bit better than 215/45/17 and they should give you a little more sidewall to protect aganist potholes, but not by much. 205/40/17 is the size that 2000 and lower civics and 2001+ dx models(14" wheels) use. the overall diameter is smaller than the stock wheels for 2001+ lx models(15" wheels).
bottom line is this, if you hit a bad pothole at high speed you are going to dent your rims whether you're using 215/45/17 or 205/40/17.
as for 18" rims, the tires are way too thin for our civics, even at the highest profile 215/40/18. they are not ment for everyday driving, most people only use them for shows. using them for everday driving will more then likely end up in a dented rim and blown tires not to mention camber wear and possible ABS and suspension damage.

btw: jgreenway, ive got a set of yoko h4's 215/45/17(80% tread) for sale. should save you a good amount of cash compared to buying them new. pm me if you're interested. all others interested are also welcome to give me an offer.

You my friend are wrong. Go look at the tire calc. 205/45/17's are the closest replacement to LX stock at only 0.29% to slow and 215/45/17's are the closest replacement to EX stock at 0.61% to slow. You won't get any closer to stock than those sizes. Also most people who get new wheels lower their car, so 215's on an LX and possibly even an EX can result in some serious rubbing. Lots of people have had this problem. Look at the tire link on this site or the link given above and you will see that. You should't speek so matter of factly if you truely don't know what you're talking about and give someone bad advice that could cause them problems.

Oh right I forgot about that. You're in the wrong forum.. lol just kidding. I have the LX Sedan, so it's the 15" wheels...
i didn't really understand your last paragraph greatcasa.. so, since I have a canadian LX sedan, the wheels are the same as the American EX model? So, 215/45/17 would be the closest replacement to my Canadian LX model? I havn't lowered the car yet, but if I lower 1-1.5 inches would i have any problems?

205/45/17 are really rare, so they are more expensive. Since I really want 45 (less risk of bending rims hitting pot holes), then I should probably get 215/45/17 eh?
Im running 215/40R17 and have H&R Sport (1.3-1.5" drop) and have no problems.
I also haven't had any prot hole problems either. I just wait in the spring until most of the "patch" work has been done to the roads before I put the rims on.
Hope that helps.
