Swapping out winter tires....

Hey!

Right now I have winter tires mounted on my stock rims. I was wanting to put the stock firestones back on the rims for the spring/summer/fall.

I was checking around here and the cheapest I found was $70. Does this seem a bit much? Does anyone know where I can get it done for cheaper?

Thanx!

What do you expect, people got to make money because you need a special tool to change tires, and good shops are hard to find so that you don't damage the lip of the rim. Goto tire shops and ask them...

I thought that when I was looking around a few years ago most of the places selling winter tires said they would do free swap on/off for you, but maybe I'm mistaken.

I have steelies for my my winter tires personally, can switch them myself.

If you can afford some steel wheels, I'd recommend putting the winter tires on there. That way you don't need to re-mount and balance them every half year. Then you could just jack up the car and swap them.

How much could a set of steel wheels possibly cost?
I thought Cdn tire was charging $30-40 per wheel for them (new), maybe you can get them cheaper at an auto wreckers yard or used tire place, you'd save money pretty quickly if you gotta pay $70 twice a year for swap, plus save the wear and tire on your tires and rims...

it's a better idea to have a 2nd set of steelies cuz taking off the tires and mount them back on the rims will stretch the tires and sometime it will leak cuz the excessive changing and swapping from rims

i think $40-50 is what the market price for take off winter tires, mount summer tires then rotate and balance

and why not use the firestones for winter and buy some 15 inches Kumho for summer? the 15s Kumho is 97 taxes included each at REV

Wow.. So many responses. Thanks.

I'm was planning to get a new set of 17" rims/tires this summer and leave the Blizaak's on the stock 15s.

But unforseeable circumstances arose and my fund were completely depleated. I'm so strapped for cash this month it's nuts.

I figure I'll just find the cheapest way to swap these out for now. I'll worry about find some steelies during the fall to mount those winter tires on.

AznSaint: $10/tire eh? That sounds alot better. Even $50 sounds more reasonable for 10 mins worth of work.

Thanks again to everyone!

go to bayview/green lane, they charge only $8 a tire with balance, and there's another one on sheppard/McCowan, i think they charge $8-10 per tire.

If you're talking about GreenBay Tires on Bayview & Green Lane, I would advise against it. I bought my summer Kumho Ecsta 712 from them and while they had very good prices, their balance job was lacking. I brought it back twice and couldn't work out the vibration at 100 km/h and above. I finally decided to spend some money and bring it to another shop (Consumers Tire @ 14th & Woodbine) and they said the previous shop (GreenBay) didn't do a good balance job. Once I had it balanced from Consumers Tire it was fixed.
