What does the 1.7 115HP non VTEC enging torque look like on the dyno? Any big differences?
I actually test drove the Civic Coupe LX (standard), and found it pretty nice

Not much difference till you go above 100kph... well at least that's what i noticed driving my friend's EL (same engine as the Si) as compared to my LX-G... booooy you can barely hear the EL's engine rev! that insulating material's really good!

Yep... i've seen the torque/hp graphs and basically, there's a slight blip of extra power somewhere around where the vtec engages... not too sure, but basically it's not really noticable... it's debatable on which trim is quicker, the LX or Si... the Si engine is slightly stronger, but the car overall is also slightly heavier... and for those looking to turbo their cars in the future, go for the LX!

SOHC VTEC is bullshit, in my opinion.
Motor Trend tested Civic LX (115HP) to be quicker than Civic EX (127HP).. and it's not the only publication to state that.
Magazines aside, in real life, the difference between the two cars are negliable. I think the only time you will see the difference is in 160+km/h, when you just SIT at 5,000RPM and higher. VTEC does aid in engine breath better.
Another small advantage is that stick-shift Civic Si has SLIGHTLY shorter 1st & 5th gearing than the Civic LX. Again, a very small negligable amount.
Personally, I'd like to think LX is better because when I cruise on the highway, I lop along at flat 2,000RPM (1,900RPM since I installed K&N drop in). VTEC Si's need 2,500RPM.. it guzzles more gas.
6th Gen and before, horsepower difference was noticeable between LX and Si. But now, they are rated at only 12HP apart. But on dyno sheets, which rates wheel horsepower, the difference is even narrower.

VVT-I powah! lol! i've been driving my mom's 210hp sienna to school because of the sweet-@ss ground clearance, michelin tires, TCS, VSC, and all those toys (heated leather woohoo!)... now driving the Civic feels soooo inadequate hehe...
can anyone swap in the 3.0L V6 toyota engine into my civic?

It'll really help in my buying decision, because the only reason I'm going to get the Si over th LX is for the 12HP gain... Originally posted by Swift

I'm gonna have to agree with cosmicjim, I bought the Si mainly for the sunroof and the 12 extra horses is a bonus. Also, the fact that the side mirrors matched the colour of the car was a bonus too since black was not an option for me...

I got my LX cause it was iether the VTEC or the OEM kit...... and I chose the OEM kit.... and PLUS in the long run....
12 horses wont make diferrence its still a civic and thers not much we can do to the engine.... dont get me wrong I love LX or Si... but in reality... SOHC 1.7 = Not much at the end.....
if your looking into power get the RSX type S at 2.0L and 200 HP... or SiR (03) which has the DOCH 2.0L with 160HP.... now thats an engine you can build on!

reasons why i UPGRADED from LX to SI, i had an LX first (AUTO) and couldn't stand not having stick so thats my MAIN reason, but these help too:
More aftermarket options for EX/SI
Sunroof - so nice in the summer....
Heated side mirrors
OEM alloys
VTEC...hehe
ABS
If it were me buying, i'd probably get the SIR, more potential, and alot more rare than our cars, more parts too...especially if your into JDM.
wanna buy my SI? its already got a system, shortshifter, lowered, intake, cleared lights, altezza grill, OEM kit...i want a EK hatch.

Yeah, Si has WAY more toys... believe me, if I was given a choice, and cost was no object (including the ridiciously higher premium on the Si), I would take the Si in a HEARTBEAT.
I dig sunroof and ABS.. rims I could live without since I would have gone aftermarket anyway.
Then there is the rear stabalizer bar.. and less-blinding interior dome light (yes, they are actually different).
Plus Si has every exterior part painted.. LX coupes still have unpainted mirros. 2001 models even had unpainted door handles! Pretty ghetto if you ask me. I had to get mine colour matched.
But the real clentcher is that Si also makes you look cool and have more friends... really.. it does!!!!

hahahah, who cares about what car u drive.
we drive a HONDA and thats what we're here to do is help eachother,
im guessing everyone has there opinion of what they want etc.....
the kit, sunroof, unpainted mirrors 12 HP gain etc......
yet there is more aftermarket goodies for SI/EX model, thats fine, there is no stopping me.
i paid at least 3 grand cheaper then if i were to buy a EX, i didnt want a sunroof b/c of my past experience with them...
SO WHAT IF THE LX is faster......... or SI has higher topend.
the main thing is we're here to represent!
my car will be faster them the SI once i have BOOST!
remmeber no VTEC!! haha
oh yeah last week i had a rental.... a 2002 ford taurus and i hated ABS... that thing is scary man.. id ratehr pump my brakes which is basically the same thing..
and once i jumped into a big car like that, i didnt want to jump into a small car again!

V-tec or no V-tec I think it really depends on the way you drive. If you're someone that drives rather conservatively and shift at 3000 rpm or so then go with the lx since you wouldn't be using v-tec that at all. Cars with v-tec are meant to be driven, and pushed to the limit, that's the way they were meant to be driven.

Naw.. ABS rocks man.. saved my *** a few times on other cars.. pumping is good, but you can never pump as fast as ABS. Besides, you could be tired or surpised and get caught with your pants down.. ABS is there to save you.
As for the VTEC thing.. well, sure you have to push it harder to gain performance out of it. But trust me, that's NOT good for your car, no matter how durable Honda engines are. Over the long run, the engine becomes noisier, and will produce more emissions.
Besides, B-series engine is the one you REALLY have to drive hard.. you can drive your D17 VTEC as hard as you want, but it's still *** slow and you will get your *** handed to you by a grandmother in a Buick Regal.

How about lets say the most important thing for me is to put a turbo in the car later, then should I go for the LX or SI?
That's basically the biggest factor for my decision, sadly, hahaha.

Most likely the LX...
1. Cause you can ASK REDVIC about his LX turbo...
2. you can say hahaha "I beat you and I dont have VTEC"

if you are planning on installing turbo, I believe Redvic said that it's better if you have the LX than the Si.
Redvic, can you explain why again? thanks..
If you aren't planning on putting a turbo, get the Si!!! Cause you get that cool badging "Si" that you'll eventually will remove anyways after you flush your trunk.
