U of T Mech Eng Grad, class of 2000 (0T0) here!!!
Workload is HEAVY HEAVY, but it's an excellent program. Plus, your career options at the end are limitless. I'm a project engineer in the auto industry (Magna), really interesting work and the pay is awesome.
Good luck dude!

Here's one piece of good advice for you..
if YOU'RE a NERD and enjoy working like a robot. Yes, engineering is definitely the program for you.
i'm serious too, you have to be NERD. (there are some exceptions though)
Great opportunies for job, but there's always a maximum you can make. If you have the brains and enjoy studying/reading, go to Schulich (sp) for business, coming out from that school will guarantee you a better position and more money than an engineer.
During my stay at UT Comp Engineering. I noticed a few things.
1) no girls
2) people aren't friendly.
3) professors either can't speak english or CAN speak english but reads from the text book.
4) alot of nerds (star war geeks that play dungeon and dragons during weekends)
I'm currently in Business and it's a whole new world. I see TEAM WORK, people are actually friendly, professors are excellent speakers etc.
PM me if u need to know anything more.

I graduated from U of Comp Eng. A lot of what scsGrumPyDriveR is saying is true although I never had chance to watch star wars and don't know what dungeon and dragon is... There are a lot of profs who doesn't speaks proper English mostly during the first year. There are a lot of very good profs during the third and fourth year. My ESL classmate when I first came to Canada actually spoke better English than some of my first year profs.
I've met a lot of friendly people though...
About graduating from business guranteeing you better position and more money.... I don't know about that. It's all about how you develop yourself and how you position youself in the market. Degree becomes much less important after few years. It's true that it's not what it used to be. About 3 years ago average job offers for U of T Comp Eng. Grad was about 4 and there were number of people who got 70~75K US right out of school but that's old story....
If you want to learn and experience a lot of different things, don't come to Engineering. Time table is set for three years and you just take courses that the school want you to for three years. Very limited choice is available during the fourth year.

thanks a lot for the imput guys...
you say there aren't a lot of friendly people...maybe in the program but what about in the college that you live in?
i applied to innis college and i expect there will be a lot of other people in the different programs (not just mech eng.)..
i like a challenge and if i don't want to do engineering after my first year it's not the end of the world if i want to switch..i was thinking maybe i would try and goto Shlulich, Ivey or Rotman and do an MBA after 4 years becuase it seems to help a lot...anyways...thanks for all the input and info...

And you'll probably wont do an MBA after 4 years of university, doesn't an MBA require experience? If not, it probably should.
To my knowledge UofT now has a *ONE YEAR* MBA program specifically for Engineers... You do your 4 yrs of engineering, and then your 5th year will be MBA courses... Look into it.
Innis? DANG... I think that's like one of the best deals... That way you won't always be eating, sleeping, drinking, studying, and partying with the same Engineering bunch... You'll actually be around GIRLS!
Besides, Innis is NEW, and has schweet net access in the dorms from what I always hear....

Btw, MBA = Big waste of time and money. Unless someone's paying for your fees, don't go. This is probably the worst time to go anways, since everyone is looking to go to school due to the thin job market. In many cases, MBA from some schools isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

MBAs make more money, but does cost alot of money to get.
Overall, if you can handle it, got the money.. you should do it. BUT do it at a well known school or else, really it won't be worth it. true.

ya ivey rotman and shulich seem to be the premiere business school in Ontario and probably in Canada...
I've seen that combined MBA at Rotman and it looks like a sweet deal....however i might want to do the PEY (Professional Experience Year) thing aswell? did any of you guys do that or know anything about it?
the book says you can make anywhere from $33 000 to $40 000 a year..you go after your 2nd or 3rd year...damn it would be hard to go back to school after that..but it looks like 4th year is the best year anyways cuase you get to build ****!

Not too many people in commerce do PEY after 3rd year. For one, it's insanely difficult to get an internship for an undergrad business student. Think about it, why would they pay you to work, who isn't fully taught, when there are loads of people with experience just dying to get jobs? I can only see someone getting an entry-level position doing PEY while attending commerce; big waste of a year I think. I know a few people who did PEY in the past and they say that most participants are CompSci or Engineers- makes sense if you ask me.

Oh one more thing. To graduate from Engineering you need 600hours of work experience and you don't have to worry about that if you do PEY.
