The old Z22 are a joke.. you could probably beat him easy.

V6 3.1L Z24 are a different matter though.. pure displacement advantage. The engine is better than a VR6's.

Hahaha.. I'm not saying Cavalier is a good car. I'm just saying that Z24s are not slugs, that's all...

As for the VR6 vs 1.8T... it's true VR6 engine is heavier, but that's all offset by much quicker throttle response, tons of mid-range punch and no turbo lag.

my buddy owns a 1.8t..... he told me he dragged a vr6...... his 1.8t was quicker off the line cuz of the lighter engine...... but the vr6 kept up but wasn't gaining on him...... but i guess at higher speeds the vr6 would have the advantage...

I could tell you about the time I smoked a Civic SiR with a rental Ford Windstar.. but that doesn't make it quicker. Every driver's skill is different. So you definitely's can't base it on a single race.. especially when the take off is concerned. That is pure driving technique.

I guess same drivers would be the key to see which car is truly quicker.. and based on the media (car mags), who use same drivers, VR6s are always quicker than 1.8Ts. Even 0-30mph.

Besides.. that extra weight only hurts the VR6 in the handling department (nose heavy, extra understeer). Having extra weight in the hood is okay for drag racing--it actually helps the front wheels hook up better during take off.

Having said that.. I would never get a VR6 either. 1.8T is a much more efficient engine, and you save a few grand when you buy it too. Plus it's easier to mod, and it won't cost much at all to make it quicker than the VR6.

Don't even go there.. new J-Body cars can SMOKE our Civics. Hell, an automatic Z24 can spank a 5-speed Civic.. a modded one at that.. I believe Redvic can testify to that one. Automatic Z24 ran high 15's... seen it myself at the tracks too. 5-speed does low to mid 15's.

"Only" 140HP.. but gobs of more torque than our Civics. And unlike our 1.7L SOHC Civics, Cavalier is 2.4L DOHC engine.. you got extra 700cc, plus extra cam.

Na, the OLD (2002-) Cavs are powerful, but 2003+ they have these ECO crap engines that are shitty. I've driven a rental 2001 Sunfire and then drove a 2003 Sunfire a few months ago, and hell, the 2001 had more power, the 2003 was a deathtrap, no hp, crappy brakes, shitty everything... Not Z24 versions but still...

You are definitely understating...

Damn, I was thinking of a Cav before the Civic too, coz my dad had a GM card from TD and had $3000 credit for a new GM car, and that meant I coulda spent half the price I paid on the Civic to get a Cavalier... But ha, decided against it, good thing...

I actually test drove a 2003 Cavalier with the new EcoTec (spelling?) engine 5speed and I thought that thing hauled some ***. I could say it is definatly faster then our Civic's, although I would never buy one.
That had to have been one of the best test drives because I was ragging on that car so hard that when I brought it back to the dealership, it reaked!!!! When me and my friend got out of the car, she was like, Oh my god... do you smell that!

Actually 130HP EcoTec *DOES* haul ***. But don't be mislead--that is only the Z22. Base model engine.

Z24 is the 2.4L DOHC.. and trust me, it REALLY hauls ***. It's up there with Civic SiRs. If you don't believe me, check out the track time yourself at Canadian J-Body Association's fourm. Low 15's and mid-15's the norm.. which is a lot better than I can about Civics. We need a 30-shot NOS to be in that range.

I won't argue about the car itself being a P.O.S. though... they are. It's very crappy.. staples exposed on the sunvisor.. exposed nuts.. you know the deal.
