Actually 130HP EcoTec *DOES* haul ***. But don't be mislead--that is only the Z22. Base model engine.
Z24 is the 2.4L DOHC.. and trust me, it REALLY hauls ***. It's up there with Civic SiRs. If you don't believe me, check out the track time yourself at Canadian J-Body Association's fourm. Low 15's and mid-15's the norm.. which is a lot better than I can about Civics. We need a 30-shot NOS to be in that range.
I won't argue about the car itself being a P.O.S. though... they are. It's very crappy.. staples exposed on the sunvisor.. exposed nuts.. you know the deal.
Don't mean to sound like I'm trying to top you... but Z24's run 14's with simple bolt ons.. they are a lot easier to extract power from, since the engine is not as efficient as the Civic's to begin with.
You have to admit... there's only so much you can squeeze from a SOHC 1.7L engine that is designed for best fuel consumption. It's pretty efficient already, if you think about it. It's good engineering, and it doesn't leave much room for aftermarket guys.
Z24 on the other hand.......... it's a 2.4L. That is the size of Accord's engine. In a little body.

They stopped selling the Z24 w/ the 2.4L DOHC mid-2002 model year... I test drove one before I bought my Civic, and it did haul ***, but it was loud, and the fuel efficiency rating sucked. Interior felt cheap and rattly (not saying my civic is perfect either though)
