i thought about getting a reactive intake and consulted my friend who works at one of the stores in pac mall. he told me there's no point of getting the pipe. just get the filter and it'll do just fine.
when he had his GTI and all he did to the car was put a filter...no pipe. he raced this golf with all these modds and guess wa.. lill ol' filter beat the modded golf.

as i told you... it is a custom made by me and my friend...
i bought the universal k&n filter and my friend had a small pipe....
it was just a pipe... no holes on the pipe for the hoses and o2 sensor...

ya.. but it is very unstable... after that kind of intake, my car's gas mileage actually better...
but.. it is very unstable....
i am thinking about going back to stock with replacement k&n filter... or cai or sri...
but since i have automatic, i like to see there is a actual difference among stock with replacement k&n filter, cai and sri..

this whole air-intake gain thing has been beat to death....basically, an sri, in terms of hp gains is useless, sure on the dyno you may see about 1-3 hp max in controlled condition, but in real world conditions you are more often than not loosing hp with an sri. the temp under your hood generaly reaches about 120-130 degrees after you've been driving for a short time, on a day when the ambient temp is around 80 degrees, you loose 1 hp for every 7 degree increase in intake air temp, we won't even get into what your ecu thinks of this increase in temp, it most likely will start to retard your timing in order to avoid any chance of detonation...do the math, an sri is basically a big heat sponge, if you don't believe me take a drive with your sri, then throw your stock airbox back.....a cai is the best for hp gains, on an 80 degree day, your sucking in 80 degree air, perfect, only drawbacks are puddles as a lot of people have found out the hard way, but you can fix that with a bypass valve.....if you ask me, the only drawback of the factory airbox (untill you start upping the hp) is the filter, it is made with mass production and low price in mind and is very restrictive, easily fixed by adding a k&n drop in, as you will notice the factory piping is placed far from the engine and out of the way of the fan....

i just have a drop in K&N drop it filter, it doesnt feel any difference and when i am driving i dont notice any power gain or improve fuel mileage or whatever but i know more air is flowing into the engine compare to the stock white piece of **** paper filter.

I find spending $400 on an intake for 1-3HP gain is ludicrious. That is the worst HP per dollar gain I have ever heard of!
Drop-In filter is good. It's cheap, and you never ever have to buy another dealership filter again. I like it because it's economical, and there's a marginal gain (if any at all).
I personally like to think that there is a gain, not because of more air flow, but because you can keep it clean. You don't have to wait until it's dirty like the OEM to replace it (well you could, it would just be really expensive). But with K&N product, you could clean it every other oil change or so, and keep it in tip-top shape. Which in return leads to better gas mileage and tip-top performance.

yeah it does take some getting used to from going with intake to stock airbox.. it's eerie quiet.. and somewhat makes things more "borring".. but it's nice when you're on the phone though!
