Dropping your car.......properly
hey guys this topic comes on here the most often b/c everyone is interested in dropping their car. Now the time has come for to make my final decision on which coils (thats what i picked over springs) and roughly how much i am looking to pay for it, i want to know peoples opinons, peoples personal stories about their drop (if used coils, or even how the springs r) and what to look out for.
I am looking for personal reviews on the several companies that make coils, the ones i know so far are:
1. Ground Control
2. Ractive
3. OBX
4. Drop Zone
5. H&R?
well thats about it from as much as i know, plz help me out b/c i dont wanna just blow my money on garbage becuz then i will be driving my car and if u pass by me this is all you'll see:

so plz just reccomend which coils i should grab and tell me which ones r thanks

also drop zone...were my first set of coils...really really ****....don't even waste you money..no matter how cheap....i would go with the Ground Controls...if i were you..it really depends on your budget....

if you want skunks i know someone whos gonna be sellin some brand new ones, think they are askin 5 bills. personaly though i would go with springs, unless you are going with a complete coilover sytem! springs are beter for cold climates too!
right now i am riding on a full coilover system made by TEIN....pretty pricy..but worth every penny in my opinion...they sell for about $2200 and up at most stores..but you can find them SLIGHTY cheaper at other shops...i paid close to $1900 for my set installed....

That should be another factor to consider going coilovers verus lowering springs.
in terms of winter driving with the teins no problem at all.....routine maintainance on all coils would really help because a lot of crap get in there...and its good to give it a good cleaning ...so far..i do drive the car sometimes in the snow....with no problem..i didn't have to raise the height..at all...but the only downside to the teins is that...they don't go as low as some would like...but its good enough for me...its about a 1.75" drop...so not too bad...so as for winter driving no prep work really needed...just...keep them clean..especially when is snows and there is salt...so far i haven't cleaned them yet...
**** man at times like this i wish i had a pic of my GROUND CONTROL COILOVERS!
the car is awesome.
dont fall for cheap crap.. remember u get what u pay for.
my GC's were 550 bucks and i got it installed at HONDA for 300 taxes included with everything.
it was pretty damn expensive but when i get warranty with whatever goes with it... i dont care...
i wish i can show u how low im riding with no problems!
my struts have not even gone yet and BH installed new bumpstops for me.
my car is a dream.
all i need is some rims and the handling will be AWESOME!
im riding LOW... and i mean LOW... ill give yah an example, if i add an OEM lip, i would be close to scraping!
i love the look, i love the tight ride,
i say this, when u want something, either save for it...... and get the right ones b/c once u put something on your car, u can have a alot of regrets... just like some on the boards!
GO GC!!!

The only benefit you get out of the sleeves are adjustability. Sounds great but not always true. For winter use, sure you can raise your ride but these aren't what you'd wanna be using when the cold weather hits. They will rust out on you and some will become brittle enough that they will break.
The ride on some of these coilover sleeves aren't the greatest either. Especially because you'll be riding on stock struts.
The only coilover system I'd recommend are the high end kinds like Tein. But like stillmatik23 has mentioned, they are not cheap, although, they do come with everything you need.
And just to let you know, 95% of people that buy coilovers rarely even adjust the ride height after they install them. Point proven when stillmatik23 mentioned that he didn't adjust the height.
Anyways, my point... just get some good aftermarket springs. You'll be better off this way and the ride will be even better.

No need to change out springs in the winter. You can if you want but they should be fine. You may scoop a little snow everynow and then but no big deal.
R2fresh - my cousin is the same way as you... what happenes when winter comes...
lemme tell you... drive it......
u dont get 2ft of snow all the time.... only on small streets better keep those wheel spinning
u got nothing to worry bout.
springs are alright, thats if u will content with the drop!
i knew i wasnt so i stepped up to coilovers.
one guy is right, there not real but sleeves....
i say go GC since there threads are anodized.
dont fall for others b/c once they break on you, most likely others will go with it.
suspension has to be one of the most expensive mods on all cars!

I would only recommend GC because it's got Eibach springs on it. Don't go with any of the other ones. But you have to ask yourself, do you really need that drop? What kind of drop are you looking for anyway? You will save lots of $$ getting springs, and save up for Koni's, or wait for Neuspeed Koni's (they're coming out soon).
I have plowed snow on my Sportline this winter, but it's not a big deal, just need to drive slower. You should know that you need to do an alignment everytime you do a major adjustment on coilovers, i.e., stock height for winter, and low for summer = $200 worth of alignment every year just to keep running on your coils. Don't forget, you will also need a camber kit for the back ($250) so it's not just the $50US cheap EBay coils that you're getting. My rule of thumbs, only the best for my car's suspension, because I don't want anything to snap and spin me off a bridge.

Ground Controls have proven to be the best in all seasons. My friend has them here in London on a 98 Civic and he drives it through the snow with no problems. And we have a lot of snow here in London. You'll never have to worry about the perches locking up because GC's only use one perch. It's a nice system.

You'll need to do some reading. Koni makes shocks. What I said about Koni's is about Neuspeed having a set of springs coming out soon that bundles their own rev of Koni shocks, that allows a .5 or 1 (can't remember) each way of adjusting the spring/shock combo.
If you are asking these questions, you probably don't want coilovers (or not know enough to want/not want them). As someone's said, you'll likely not going to change your ride height in the end, so choose a height that you want to drop to, and get the right springs for it, and spare the bouncy ride. I would suggest you read up on the suspension forum for some background before you decide on spending any money on suspensions... $400 is not enough a budget for suspension... You may be able to get H&R springs installed for that price, but eventually you will need camber kit (may) and definitely eventually you will need shocks. My word of advice, if you have a tight budget, don't mod your car, coz you won't be able to stop! Ask anyone here.
MSOFT has a point,
u will barely adjust your setup once u get the coils.
i will be adjusting them b/c i need to fit the 17's or 18's to fit properly, b/c the way it sits now, if i add 17's on, u wont be able to see the tires... but its alright right now.
its true, once u start, u wont stop!
but i would definately recommend the GC if u end up going with them, but if your going springs, definately go EIBACH!
thats all i can really say.....
hope u make the RIGHT CHOICE!
ive been through both setups... i know EIBACH makes nothing but quality b/c ive had them on my Neon, and now i have GC on my civic.... no regrets
