The fact is, Honda has WEAK auto tranny. I've been saying that for a long time now... and it's true.
Having said that, yes, force downshifting isn't good for the tranny... but guess what? When you stomp on your accelerator, it downshifts anyways. And every auto tranny has a rev limiter that protects the both engine and the tranny itself. Try going 180km/h on the highway, stick it in "2".. it will not do it for you.. it will only goto "3", which is actually within acceptable RPM. Every auto tranny has it, and it's a safety pre-caution.
I'm not saying you should be doing it all the time. In fact, for the sake of your car, you shouldn't. But if you think about it, you shouldn't take corners hard (bad on your shocks, and stress on chassis).. you shouldn't leave your car out in the sun (bad for paint).. you can go on and on about how you should baby your car and all, but then in the end, you might as well just take the bus if you are so over-protective about the cars..
I've owned a many cars int he past... Toyotas.. Fords.. Chryslers.. GMs.. but I have to say that Honda has one of the weakest trannys in the market. My Civic harldy got abused, yet the tranny went.. along with a few other people's that are on here. Some of my cars in the past, like the Corolla, has been had its **** kicked out of so many times, it's not funny. It has ridicious amounts of mileage on it, and it's still rock solid. No sign of tranny going whatsoever. Even with heavy loads.
So with that in mind, I don't think anybody should give Honda any slack for making these shitty *** trannies. I thought Fords & Chryslers made this kind of stuff and not Honda, but I guess not. They recently had a lot of recalls on Acura TLs, CLs, and Honda Accords. I think it's time they did a recall for Honda Civics, but they haven't even shown any attempt yet. There have been a lot of complaints by the owners, for other problems such as interior rattles, gargalling noise in rain and poor rear shock damping, but they continue to do nothing about it.
Honda's relying on the "Civic" name badge to sell its cars too much. I can honestly tell you that my next car will definitely NOT be another Civic... if they continue this kind of quality control.

i agree with you ... everyone is having problems with their civics yet honda does nothing about it .. except that one recall about the fuel pump (or whatever it was) ... i went to check out a whining sound coming from the engine and they said it was the intake or alternator due to my aftermarket pullies ... they may be right about the alternator (?) but i asked if it could be the trans. ... they said unless my car is shifting weird then it is not the trans. ... honda better straighten up their service or i will boycott them (hahhahahhaa) ...[hr]
