Ok...Test drove the TDI on Saturday. Great pull off the line, however I realized that you cannot rev the motor. All of the power is in the low end. great on fuel...approx 800 km on a tank of fuel. Well I asked around and decided that the maintenance issue was a big concern among VW owners. Most 'dubbers' love their cars however they cringe when you ask them about repair expenses...VW is not an option.
Well I know that I want the reliablilty and economy of a Japanese car...so I looked around and found out that Mazda is producing a limited edition Protege (Mazdaspeed) with a Garrett T25 turbocharged motor...170HP, 450watt MP3 deck, 11 inch brakes and 17 inch wheels...SOUNDS GOOD so far...here is some more info from www.MazdaUSA.com
The new MAZDASPEED Protegé is designed to meet those demanding specs. Mazda worked with several performance equipment suppliers and with famed engine tuner Reeves Callaway to make sure this Protegé fully earns the MAZDASPEED label. In addition to special equipment from Racing Beat, Racing Hart, Sparco, Tokico, and Kenwood, the MAZDASPEED Protegé arrives with a turbocharged engine that produces 170 horsepower. That's a 40-horsepower boost over the Protegé's standard 130hp 2.0L engine (the MP3, thanks to its less restrictive exhaust and an upgraded engine management module, was rated at 140hp).
"Structurally, the Protegé is very rigid, very strong, and is a great platform to build from," says Rasmussen.
Callaway Cars installs a Garrett T25 turbocharger that provides power without sacrificing overall efficiency. To handle that extra power, a heavy-duty clutch disc and pressure plate are included with the five-speed manual transmission. To put that power to the pavement, a Tochigi Fuji Sangyo KK Super limited-slip differential is installed.
Racing Beat, well-known tuner of Mazda vehicles for more than 30 years, helped develop the chassis and exhaust modifications for the MAZDASPEED Protegé. These include a front strut tower brace, special MacPherson struts and coil springs, Tokico shocks, a 27mm stabilizer bar, and special bushings. Racing Beat also tuned the rear suspension (with its Twin Trapezoidal Links setup) to include Tokico shocks, 27mm stabilizer bar, and special coil springs and bushings.
All Tokico shocks are twin-tube with a low-pressure design to enhance steering feedback and response, to control chassis motion, and to keep the tires well planted. In this case, those tires are Z-rated, 215/45 aspect Bridgestone Potenza RE040s, and they're mounted on custom, five-spoke Aluminum Super Silver finish wheels by Racing Hart. The wheels are 17 inches in diameter and 7 inches in width.
The MAZDASPEED Protegé is designed to stop every bit as well as it goes and turns, because it comes with Euro-spec ventilated 10.8-inch front discs and solid 11-inch rear discs with three-channel antilock and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution technologies.
The exterior gets an aggressive appearance package that includes a front spoiler, large round fog lights, aero side sills, and rear skirts.
To make sure the car is just as much fun on the inside, Kenwood supplies its Excelon KDC-MP919 CD/MP3 receiver with 450 watts, four channels, six speakers, an eight-inch subwoofer, a 250-watt amplifier, a liquid gel 3-D screen, and wireless remote.
The interior package was designed in conjunction with Sparco and includes drilled aluminum pedals with rubber inserts, an aluminum shift ****, silver-faced gauges, suedelike seat bolsters, and a leather-wrapped NARDI steering wheel with color-keyed stitching.
Speaking of color, the MAZDASPEED Protegé will be available in two very exciting ones: Spicy Orange or Black Mica. Only 2,000 of the 2003-model MAZDASPEED Protegés will be available in the United States and Canada late this year, so if it's speed you're after, you better shop quick.
