Factory Turbo Cars
Ok this might be a dumb question but it has been boggling my mind for awhile now. Why is it if I see a factory turbo car on the road (GTI, Porsche, WRX), i can't hear the psssst noise, but on aftermarket cars the BOV noise is more noticable? Is there something different that I'm missing from a factory set up turbo from say an aftermarket one?

how did you know it wasn't me?
lol
sorrry, us white civics like to tail gate people...!!! haha... j/k
because............ the factory turbo charged cars.. like the wrx proche and GTI... have a BY-PASS VALVE instead of a blow off valve.......
by-pass releases excess pressure VIA intake... so it goes back to ur throttle body.....
blow off releases excess pressure VIA atmosphere (it just comes out of a valve HENCE the noise ppppppppssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh)

does not matter how big ur turbo is........
excess pressure will still be realeased... no matter what.....

andoy knows his stuff!
What I can't stand right now are people putting BOVs on any stock turbo car and I mean STOCK internals. They do it just for the noise... it's a cool sound 'n all, but if you're running fully stock internals and boost, there is not enough excess pressure generated by your engine to release into the atmosphere and in the end, you're actually loosing speed between shifts because the turbo has to re-spool and make up for the loss. As for the whirling or whistling noises a turbo engine makes, most stock cars come with Silencers from the factory, not every person with a WRX wants to hear that noise everytime they step on the gas. Just like an intake silencer, they are removable and then you can kind of hear the turbo spool haha. Anyways, thats my beef o' the day .

All turbocharged engine, in order to prevent overboosting when you let off the gas pedal, uses a device call BOV to relieve excess pressure away from the high pressure zone. Normally this excess air is vented back into the intake before the turbocharger, allowing measured air to be taken account of for fuel requirement. If this mass of air is released to the atmosphere without proper compensation to the engine management system you have a unncessary rich condition, the result is wasting gas, loss of power and more pollution to the environment.
A good BOV should stay closed (not venting) until the threshold, however, many factory units are found to be "leaking".
Other than a BOV there are anti-lag devices that automatically dump excess air & fuel when you let off throttle to prevent the turbo from slowing down. The only downside is the turbocharger won't last more than a couple days when you do this.
The wastegate achieve the same result but by by-passing hot exhaust gas away from the turbine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Best BOV's don't make that noise right? I mean...if you are releasing excess pressure via the atmosphere, that just means your turbo has to spool again, therefore more turbo lag. But a good BOV should hold boost the longest or something along those lines right?
Is by-pass the same as wastegate? They seem similar in function base on Andoy's and T.O's definitions. Also, if excess pressure is sent back to the throttle body via bypass, isn't that pressure extremely hot? It prolly gets cool again through the intercooler before it gets sent back again though right?

If the turbo is not big enough .. your blow off valve can't make the psh sound as loud.
i've seen a guy with A4 1.8t turbo is not big enough..so the sound is weaker..not as loud..has a blow off valve.... and WrX holy........the bov is wicked..but it gets annoying..hahah
