OT: Clarify Computer store scams

I've been in reseller business for 4 years, and I've learned some interesting info from my suppliers.

You know all the computer stores with amazing prices and "cash discounted" prices?

There was one called ICCT a couple of years ago (probably still around) that had prices like $269 for something that at cost is $280 for 10 units. That's not because they bought in 1000s, but because of tax.

My tie at a supplier said ICCT is their client (when I inquired why my cost price is so high) but ICCT used to buy under another company's name! Confirmed this when I heard some guy at another supplier mutter a company name, the clerk at the supplier said, "oh, that's ICCT, right?"...

Anyway, basically they scam PST by pretending they're another company. All parts are bought under the other company, then sold to ICCT at a loss. Then the other company files for bankruptcy, and most of the debt in PST is waved when the company dies.

BTW, ICCT was caught for fraud two-three years ago for this, but as usual incorporated companies last, so they might still be around.

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up on some of the outrageously cheap "cash" deals in the papers or at some Malls starting with P.

Also, most computer stores won't list which manufacturer the parts are, or they use generic stuff, so be careful. I will always use premium parts and charge a very very reasonable margin. As soon as a couple of you buy stuff from me you'll know.

Yep.. I just went there two weekends ago actually.. so I'm pretty sure they're still around. I bought a monitor there about three years ago.. the fact is, doesn't matter if they are scamming.. as long as they are cheap, I'll go buy from them. Besides, I don't need them to stay around after I buy my stuff.. my monitor broke about a year ago, I just shipped it back to the manufacturer and they fixed it for me!

I'm all for these cash deals man =)

Of course it's all good for the consumer if you can get cheap deals from them. The thing is, especially if you get a system, you want the company to be around for you if it goes wrong, so that you don't have to be the one troubleshooting which part is defective.

Plus, most of these stores will sell you OEM stuff, i.e., OEM ATI video cards are clocked lower than retail cards, but are much cheaper than retail. So be careful when comparing prices of OEM and retail parts.

Also, if they've done cash deals, their invoices are useless, as they are non-legit since the part has been resold then sold... Legally, OEM parts can only be resold once from manufacturer-distributor-reseller-end user. So your warranty becomes the manufacture date rather than sale date. I've had an experience with Maxtor just last month as a hard drive I sent back (Quantum drive) showed up as out-of-warranty on their database even though it's only 1 year old, so I called, then sent back my invoice as proof of purchase for my client, and they've covered the warranty by the sale date.

Anyway, not trying to start a debate, just want to give a heads up on this. As I've said before, I'm not looking to make huge profits from here (can't with such little margin in computer sales) but my experience so if you're comfortable with getting those crazy low prices feel free, from an IT person pov is I'd only buy from reputable stores. ICCT is just an example. This really applies to all other stores that have credit machines but will take 3-5% off cash deals.

Yeh.. I hear ya man. If I'm buying a system I would probably go to a place more reputable.. but then again, I never let them built my machine - DIY is the way to go! I'm really picky with parts.. usually won't compromise with those cheap crap they put in systems. Those all-in-one boards drive me crazy. Used to work in a computer store too, and seen too many RMAs with those boards.

Still remember how low the margins were too.. you're right, it's hard to make big profits selling computer parts.

I'm actually looking to buy a couple of items, would you be able to get me some prices?

I'll make super low margin for parts only if it's several items, as I'll only have to pick up. DIY is definitely a good way to go. Though it only takes me 1 hour to build a new system, so it'll save you some time and aggrevation for those less confident building the PC.

Give me a list of what you want on my ICQ 3695311 or Email aaron@aysis.com and I'll hook you up with good price.

Gus: Yeah, I'm hoping to get some flow going again starting here. I've stopped pretty much flat out for last year of U because of workload and wanting to do well enough to grad. Now that I have spare time again mind as well make use of the ties and relations I've setup in the past 4 years.

Decamo has a little shameless behaviour in the past
ICCT is pretty up front about scamming taxes. I went in to buy a cable and case and they wanted me to pay cash. I said sure and gave them my debit card. She said no, cash! I said debit is as good as cash and she got upset and took my transaction.

The ppl right b4 me were forced to pay cash for a $1500 system. They refused to take debit for them!
Bunch of tax scammers.

The TDKs aren't expensive. It's the right price, trust me. What I do is I have a spindle of TDKs and a spindle of no-namers. The TDKs are used for archives and game CDs and the no-namers are for movies and audio CDs and misc stuff. It evens out great.

What you can also do is find someone who wants some too and split. Get 100 TDK and 100 no-namers and split even 50/50, so you end up paying only $60 for 100 etc.

Or u can get 30 TDKs for $30 and a spindle of 50 no-namers for $20.
