How much do you earn, relative to the amount of time you spend?
Let's not get into exact dollar figures, but more of a relative to $X.
I guess this is more of a rant more than anything, but I figure I'd throw it into CanEast
So I'm sitting here, Sunday night, and I have more work than I ever had in university...
I'm full time, working in IT for an insurance/brokerage firm, so I have no overtime pay. I routinely booked 50-60 hours per week, every week, in my timesheets. (regular day is 7 hours, 9am-5pm (1 hr lunch.) That's 35 hrs/wk.)
So, with 35 hrs/wk being the norm, I would be making X * 35.
However, because I'm working so much more hours, my effective $x/hr drops to $Y/hr, where y << x
So, I'm probably making something like 35 * (0.75 * X)... I'm making 75% of what I am really being paid, because Im' spending so many hours working!
I dunno, so many friggen responsibilities managing 6 kids, 1 indian in India, and 1-2 other full times. Being a kid myself, it's daunting...
Would you trade your job (up, or down) for more/less responsibilities? Would you trade up, for more responsibilities, same pay? Would you trade down for less responsibilities, lower pay?
I always told myself that this is a learning experience, as a reason for the "lower" pay..... (relative to work/responsibilities.)
Another rant... Would you care about "title"? A consultant here earns $100/hr, and he says "for $100/hr, I'll get you a coffee." .... i.e. Would you CARE if you had no title, as long as you were treated "professionally", or would you care about the big stuff.....i.e. business cards, recognition, etc..... I dunno...

I work at a factory...Honda of Canada MFG..i just make an hourly wage..
working 8.5 hours a day, half an hour lunch, and 2 breaks of 10 minutes.
I get paid for working 8 hours.
Since i'm only a temp..i dont get any paid vacations, but that doesnt matter, i hardly get any vacation days at all..So in reality..its about 42.5 hours a week, plus it takes me about 40 minutes to drive there.
Its shift work so, for 2 weeks i work 6:30am - 3pm (but i have to get up at 4:30am)
and for another 2 weeks i work from 4:30pm - 1am
This is all from..monday - friday.

Damn..its nice you have 1 hour lunch! I wish i had an hour lunch..lunch goes by so quick for me..
I guess, i have lots of time to spend becuase..i dont really have any responsibilities yet..i'm only 19 years old..except concentrating on school..which when i start, i wont be working at Honda.

I am not sure I understand this rant. The reason people are treated professionally is usually because of your title. If you have no title people will not know how to treat you. In my job I need to be able to talk at different levels and I guage that by people's titles. If I am talking to a junior I speak at a more basic level but If I am talking to a specialist I use jargon and make specific citations to very detailed concepts. Therefore, a title will dictate how people will treat you.

I guess it really depends on your environment.
Here, I work beside analysts, CoOps, developers, lead developers, testers, assistant VPs, VP, Senior VPs, etc.
Some are consultants, some are full time.
The consultants earn so much money, to a certain level they said "I don't care what my title is, I just want money. Keep my at my current title, just give me more money. A lower title means less hassle, less stress."

Well its pretty safe to say that everyone wants more money and less responsibility and stress.
But the more responsibility you have the greater you pay to compensate you for the level of stress and risk that comes with that position.

i work 13 hours a day at the hospital and we do 2 days and 2 nights in a week. I have a lot of responsibility especially with working at pediatrics, its crazy. Dealing with kids with cancer and their families is insane, im about to burnout..lol. Oh nurses dont get paid enough for what we do.....lol

I wish that was all true jer, theres not enough nurses and we get more and more work that we have to do and responsibilities since we are always short-staffed and we dont get compensated for the extra work we do.

yeah but if you are still doing the job it must be somehow satisfying for you or you wouldn't do it. Therefore, the fact that you remain on the job is proof that the compensation is enough. Perhaps they rely on the fact that you get instrinsic rewards from helping other people.
