GTI vs. Civic Si
Here's the deal:
I own an 02 si coupe.
I have an opportunity to buy a 00 GTI 1.8 turbo.
After a few test drives, I'm really feeling the power this thing can deliver.
If I sell the si and buy the gti, I will end up +++ with a few thousand left for mods.
The GTI is obviously a much faster car. It currently has a front lip kit, upgraded suspension, tint, and a chipped ecu. The downside is that insurance can be expensive, as well as parts.
If you had this opportunity, would you take advantage of it.

Personally I would love to get my hands on a GTI but my only issue is that parts are also mucho dinero for the GTI. WOrth it I'm sure but in my current frame of mind I don't think I would.
If you do sell the Si, I want dibs on your system. You know what I mean. BTW I still have a cluster to give you for that project we talked about - pm me when you're free to meet up, I'll buy you a coffee or a porno mag or something.

Hi Telly, that's one of my biggest concerns...expensive parts, insurance rape, and I hear they need a lot of maintaince when compared to our reliable honda engines. Pm me about the project, this week is good.
Pharoh, the current owner told me with it's current chip it's around 200hp. A friend (VW mechanic) told me it can push a lot more than that with the right mods that are not too difficult to do.

trust me stay AWAY from VW first hand experience speaking here ....piece of junk....worst of german car companies...keep the honda....10000000000000000000000x more reliable.
aftermarket parts are a little cheaper and easier to find. There are lots of upgrades for the 1.8t, including frankenstien 2.0t
VW's can have problems, electrical, fit and finish, and some items do not hold up near as well as a Honda, like the interior tends to fall apart. but hey they are fun.

i worked at georgetown VW and i drove the GTi all i can say its a very nice car but with that axle back rear end id rather just get a civic SIR to many problems with VW's over all the new 7 Gen's have better stlyin there.

the 00 GTI is 150 HP, (02 GTI 1.8T 180hp) (1999 GTI is just a 2 litre golf)
so stock vs stock
si coupe 2002 > 00 GTI 1.8T
acceleration should be about the same or in favour of the civic, civic is much much lighter.
GTI 1.8 doesn't have the greatest reliability rating.
Civic outhandles GTI 00 1.8T all day long. Civic 02 coupe has multi-link double wishbone rear suspension, where as the GTI is still in the dinosaur age with the solid rear bean type suspension.
With all those negatives the GTI certainly has one majot positive.
Very easily modded to 200WHP, just got the mod the darn ECU and get the thing to run more boost.
d17a2(02 si coupe engine) engines are diffcult to get gain out of, bolt-ons wont give you much. You would have to turbo or swap.

German cars == shitty quality/reliability compared to Japanese car, higher gas consumption than Japanese cars, uses Japanese styling without the japanese quality, $$$ for parts, rapes you for repairs out of warranty, maintenance is expensive... shall I continue?
hmm I love my civic but you guys are a little blind saying the GTI is not fast.
2003 Honda Civic LX 9.3 17.20 (115-120hp)
2002 Volkswagen GTI 1.8T 6.5 15.30 (180hp)
thats probally even a lil slower.. ive heard them running high 14s stock.. but that could be b.s.
not to mention the GTI has a $400 ECU that adds like 50pounds of tourque.. and it has a huge modding pottential.
im not ragging on civics. we still fvck up there gas mileage.. but saying your sedan smokes GTIs. We cant let ourselfs be like those cocky mustang drivers. We have to know our facts
