Rep Power: 0 K20 Swap problems (revisited)
Hay all;
Row call for K20 swaps... has anyone done this? I am on the virge of gettin it done but figured we could start this thread and post info on it. Problems? unexpected things.
Lets hope we can get some info on here about parts needed, things that need to be changed... etc
Heres some info that i have gathered:
Parts Needed
- K20A2 or K20A3 (from Civic Si) Engine With:
- AC compressor
- alternator
- P/S pump or idler pulley (from Civic Si)
- wiring harness
- exhaust manifold and catalytic converter
- ECU
- Transmission and starter
- intermediate shaft
- Axles from either 02 Civic Si or 94 up Integra GSR (we used 02 RSX with RSX knuckles and hubs)
- RSX or 02 Civic Si subframe
- Hasport ESK1 bolt in mount kit (as of this time the kit will not work with the K24)
- Hasport ESKWH conversion wiring harness
- RSX shifter assembly and cables
- 02 Civic Si radiator and fans (although the RSX will fit with some trimming around the radiator cap opening in the grill)
- 02 Civic Si upper and lower radiator hoses (RSX are longer and may kink)
- RSX throttle cable
- RSX fuel line, brake booster line and purge line
- RSX AC line from compressor to condensor
- RSX clutch lines from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder
- Custom AC line from compressor to evaporator (Hasport should have one available by April)
- 90 Accord negative battery cable
- If you want powersteering:
- RSX high pressure powersteering hose and return line
- 92 Civic P/S resevoir w/ bracket and a section of hydraulic hose to go from the pump to the resevoir
The immobilizer:
Last, for driving the car over to Honda to get the RSX ECU flashed to accept the Civics key code, you should be able to drive on the Civic ECU for a short distance. Make sure you bring the VIN information with you from the RSX. People with a non-US engine may have to find another option.
Other things:
With our Civic we opted to use the RSX knuckles, hubs and brake assemblies, so we also used the RSX axles. The RSX axles can be use with the smaller Civic hubs if you change the outer joints to those of the GSR or Civic Si. Our Civic was an auto, so some wiring then had to be done to hook up the park/nuetral safety switch to the clutch pedal switch. Hey I hope this sheds some light on what is involved in the swap. We will have more pictures on our web site as we further modify the car. Also look in the near future for the first K24 swap as we build a big block for our Civic and soon we will be doing a K24A Accord engine and tranny swap into a 01 Civic.
1) The Civic's engine bay has the same dimensions as the Civic Si, not the RSX. For that reason the RSX base model engine's intake manifold will not clear the core support.
2) The Civic Si radiator is a better fit than the RSX radiator, due to the location of the filler cap. The stock radiator's hose necks are in awkward positions and do not work well.
3) You will need the RSX or Civic Si subframe.
4) The 01-02 Civic engine harness contains the wiring for the primary O2 sensor, but not the RSX or Civic Si engine harness. This is a necessary part for code free operation so it has to be added. In the RSX or Si it is called the AFR (air fuel ratio) sensor, There is also a relay that goes along with it. The 01-02 Civic HX uses the same part. Use the HX wiring diagram for proper hookup. This part is for you Htown, it will fix your check engine light.
5) If you want powersteering, you will need to cut away some of the hood's underside support for pulley clearance. Use the RSX P/S hose, and return line.
and finally the install:

....................................
This is all dandy but can anyone that has done this swap vouch for what problems they ran into, parts they needed beyond the above, extra monies they had to spend, custom modifications needed...
I hope this post can be a repository as the info appears to be scattered all over the place..
peace

Rep Power: 0 I have a friend with a shop in Burlington that is going to do it for me. A couple other shops in TO were over priced. I am not going to do it until i have done all the research and talked to some people who have experienced it. I posted about K20's before and had this reply from a dood:
Alright, here's the deal...I have the k20a swap in my 02 civic and believe me, it was more work and money then i had ever expected. There are many problems you will probably run into, as i did. I've spent around 11g's to do mine. And 2 months in the shop.
I never got a chance to talk to him, but hopefully this post can drum up some people who have actually done it.

Rep Power: 278 - Hasport ESKWH conversion wiring harness
hasport doesn't have a wiring harness.
you need to send your civic harness and the rsx harness to them and they convert the harness for you. $350 usd
how much did shops quote you?
it requires alot of work and parts alone will run you alot of money.
HASPORT mount kit and k20a motor is minimum $7500 CAD
HASPORT wiring conversion $500 CAD
its alot for parts...labour is the least of ur worries.

Rep Power: 0 told you guys it wasn't easy!!
finding parts was the hardest part.
I'm just getting the AC and power steering done now.
But having a 200hp civic is nice

Rep Power: 0 yeah it's alway nice to have an engine swap to any car but i honestly dont want to go thru the hassle and paying arms and legs for the transplant.
therefore i kept my civic stock and left it for my sister and share with the family and get myself a car that has the faster engine in it already.
hope the ppl getting the swap done can pay as little as possible and get it done ASAP

Rep Power: 0 So i inquired at JRP in Mississauga yesterday and they said about 9 grand for the JDM 240 HP K20 engine. They have done quite a few K20 swaps and said they have most if not all the bugs worked out of the swap. I think these guys would be a good candidate to get this done at. Still kinda expensive though...

Rep Power: 0 why don't you guys save that $10 - $15 thousand you spend on the swap and the $20 to $25 thousand it costed for your car and just pool that money (totaling $30 to $40 thousand) and just buy a nice Acura TL with 270 HP already and a ride that'll be more luxurious than your Civic can EVER be...?
I drive a Civic too.. and if I had a second chance.. TL or IS300.. here I come.

Rep Power: 0 sounds good.. lets try and keep this k20 swap related. The whole reason why i started this post is to get a pool of resources on this swap, prices, problems.. and things in general that can help those that will be doing it.
