Question What is SMS in Windows?

SMS == System Management Server

I'm not talking about SMS on a cell phone.

What is it, what does it do?

Is it kinda like spyware? i.e. your local IT department spying on you?

How do you know it is running, and can you kill the process(es)?

anyway.. back to the point, can rogers monitor what i do?.. this is from home.
also, do they have a right?.. i dont really have a web server or ftp. i was just leeching like any cable user does!!
i have been so freaked out. that i have like peer guardian on now. and i keep seeing all these hits on my ip.

There's always been talk about this.

But yes, they can, do, and will monitor how MUCH you use, the amount of dynamic bandwidth you use on a regular basis (i.e. somehow you saturate your entire 100kb/s or more bandwidth)...

As to how and/or where you download stuff from, probably not Rogers, but I've heard some smaller ISPs put up a firewall, and/or slow down transfers (if that's possible?!) for stuff going through specific ports. If BitTorrent can switch default ports, set it up to use a non-default port... Other times, like eDonkey (that's what I use), it's been known that ISPs block out the ports totally.

Unless you've been surfing kiddie **** or hate sites, and then they are given a court order to give out your information, there's no real reason for them to know, and/or specifically track, exactly what you're downloading....

rogers can measure the amount of data transferred/bandwidth your account uses...(upload and download)
if you constantly download what they would call "excessive" amounts, i guess they reserved some right to suspend ur account for a few days...

however, i think they should have mailed you or called you.
i've read some posts where people actually got letters that said that if they didn't change their internet transfer behaviour drastically in a couple of days, they would suspend the account... these people were transferring 20gb-60gb per month.

these people claim that if you d/l less than 20gb per month, you shouldn't get any hassle with rogers. but you should call the rogers and ask.
