do you have too?

I went out to the resturant for a birthday party with 15+ people on the weekend at a upclass Japanese Resturant. We ate our bill to $800....now the service wasnt that good because you can tell they had a thing with us, because we were younger then the average group. and they thought we were probably LITTLE PUNK TEENS. And litterally blown off....When the check came, they included the total with a GRATUITY TIP.

My question is do we HAVE to pay that? Even if the service was not worth the gratuity that they charged? oh ya they charged 20% rather then the normal 15%.

I know that when I go eat there alone with my GF they dont include gratuity.

Usually when you are in groups of 10 or more, gratuity is automatically tacked onto the bill.

Even though you may not have received the service level that you believe you deserved, and/or worth the % gratuity that they tacked on, there is always more work involved with a larger party.

There's more dishes to bring to you, more pop to refill, more dishes to clean up and bring to the back, etc.

And, because of all that, the waiter/waitress is spending more time with your table, and thus is giving up on potential customers from another table...

It's part of the bill, and you must pay. What happens if you decide to walk out and only pay the bill, minus the gratuity? Do you really want to be bothered by a scene like that on your birthday? Nah, pay the bill, never go again, and tell your friends that you had a bad experience...

My 2 cents

**** that, there is still the exact same proportion of dishes, drinks etc. If I don't get decent service, I don't tip. fortunately this has only happened once that I can remember, but nonetheless i don't think restaurants have the right to include gratuity, that's whay it's called GRATUITY. especially not 20% In your situation I would have left a 10% tip, and enjoyed causing a scene.

but then once I went to Montreal and had dinner there for 6, they still added gratuity. we were pissed cuz the service sucked (food took forever, the beer we ordered was overflowig, the waitress treat us like criminals - stood there until we paid the bill). And the Gratuity was written in by hand. Not like it was through the tilt.

Oh well

The resturant I ate that charged us 20% Gratuity was Prince Japanese Steakhouse at 5555 Eglington

this is how I look at it....Machines wash the dishes, employees bring out the food and cook for us. being 15+ people - even 100 people..If the seating capacity isnt yet maxed, they should treat it like it was a normal busy day.

I'm pissed cuz at that time I couldn't say anything cuz I was already busted drunk and my friends covered the whole bill on this stupid resturant I choose. They didnt say anything becasue they didnt mind, but I mind for bring them to this stupid resturant. i'm just ranting

Never ever pay tip, when they force it.

I *NEVER* do, if they try any lame fu*king stunt like that with me. Or I'll leave a penny behind. They are doing it from LACK OF RESPECT FOR YOU!!

They think you won't leave tip, therefor, they are taking the initiation. Please, do not fall for this tactic....... asians are the only people that force people to pay tip like that. FU*K THEM.

thats what I think.......I felt like I was so disrespected? like we racked up the bill to $650 and then they still want $150 of tip money from me with little and bad service.

$650 bucks for 2 hours...I think thats well enough to pay for food and workers.

The way I look at it they wouldnt have business there that night if it wasnt for us.

Oh well....we paid cuz I thought you HAD too.....
