November 02 2003 at 04:27PM
Cologne, Germany - Formula One team Toyota are at the centre of an espionage investigation with local police visiting the Japanese team's factory in Cologne and questioning a male employee suspected of betraying his former team Ferrari.
"The police came to our factory on Thursday and searched through the office and work place of one of our employees," Toyota press spokesman Andrea Ficarelli told German sports agency SID.
The man, who could not be named for legal reasons, was questioned by police before being released the same afternoon and returned to work on Friday.
It later emerged that a court in Modena had launched the investigation with the Toyota employee suspected of taking secret information from the Ferrari team before his move to Toyota.
"The German police were working in collaboration with their Italian colleagues," Ficarelli told German newspaper Kolner Express.
"The action was ordered by a court in Modena."
Toyota stated their innocece in the affair as their employee returned to his post on Friday morning.
"Our only involvment in this affair is that the man works for us," added Ficarelli. "We have not done anything wrong."
