No, it wont look any bigger than it does now.

We're talking about 55 milion km . Even if it got a few million KM closer you wouldnt be able to notice the difference with your eye.

no point continuing to argue with you. But prepare to be disappointed.

I just hate it when people don't understand astronomy and hype up all sorts of fantastical happenings with it, then other people listen to them and get disappointed when it doesn't happen as they believed. It creates a bad image for astronomers, and science in general, and disappointing people SUCKS.

Will now refrain from posting on this thread again. Mars will be bright, and indeed a worthy thing to look at in the night sky, do check it out if you have time, u'll never see it this brilliant again. Unless u live to be about 1200 years old

Isn't mars bigger than earth??? I don't know...
but if it is alot bigger than Earth, then at that distance it should look as if it's the same size as the moon.
I'm not an astronaut or anything, nor do I study space... BUT I DID STAY AT HOLIDAY INN LAST NIGHT!! oh, and I watch alot of TLC... hehehe

I'm not trying to disappoint people... if it does have the size of the moon or it's just a bright star that's cool. I didn't base this on MY studies or research or anything, I based it on the e-mail that I got that I am just TRYING to share with other people.
>excerpt<

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the
night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc
seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large
as
the full moon to the naked eye.

perhaps they meant that if you use a binocular that can magnify at 75-power, it will look like the size of the moon.

ANyway, if I'm wrong.... It's those damn cinnamon rolls from holiday Inn that messed up my insides.. hehehehe j/k
But I do wish it will be the size of the moon so I don't need to buy a telescope just for that night... then return it the next day.

Well damn I was out for a walk with a girl last nite and I spotted Mars right away, bloody huge and bright! I was impressed enough, it's just a matter of what kind of hype Cue stirred up here and what expectations you all now have. I just need to beat up a nerd and take his telescope now...
