need advice on parking and driving in NYC

Thanks to everyone who helped with my parking/driving questions in DC. Now I'm curious about Manhattan. On my roadtrip, my friends and I are going to stop at a certain Irish pub in midtown Manhattan (58th St. East, I believe) for lunch. We'll probably be in Manhattan from noon to 2pm on a Friday. How is traffic at that time? How is traffic in that part of the city? I don't know much about driving in NYC. Also, how is the parking around there? Are parking garages really expensive?

If you're curious, we're stopping at that Irish pub because my friends and I are checking out the top 10 Irish pubs in America according to a brochure my friend showed me. We're already hit 3 of them: Nighttown in Cleveland, The Black Rose in Boston, and Kinsale in Boston. On this trip we're going to check out Neary's in NYC and The Dubliner in DC.

Driving in the city is fun. People cross the street withought looking and hope that you hit them. I suggest you drive around and find a spot. Garages are expensive. It'lll run you well over 20 bux. Just read signs because they always try and screw you over so they can give you a ticket. You're prob gonna have to use a meter.. They have these muni meters where there is a central meter lik in the middle of the block. Put your money in and display your reciept on the winshield inside your car. Watch out for the taxi drivers they're agressive and they always win!! Have fun

Thanks for the reply. I love driving in Boston and I can handle aggressive taxis and fearless pedestrians. I guess what I'm worried about is traffic and finding parking. I'll be sure to read the signs carefully. That's interesting about the muni meters.

Toca, have you ever been to Neary's on 58th St?

HAHAHAHA...you love driving in boston?? i dont think youll have any problems with manhattan. boston drivers are waaaaaaaaay worse.
as far as parking, ive never had a problem, but i go at night and more towards the village not like midtown. it really depends on where you go to these pubs. noon - 2 youre gonna get the lunch crowd, so thats gonna suck. if you dont have to drive in the city, id suggest you dont just cause of the parking and traffic...but its not that bad. just avoid the big streets like 5th ave, madison, park ave, broadway, etc. dont drive through times square either.

what i would do if i were you, id drive into hoboken, park the car and take the Path into the city. have your lunch and drinks and whatever...then take the Path back to hoboken, get a bit sober, and drive wherever youre gonna go after manhattan.

Hmm, sounds good. Thanks for the advice. So Boston drivers are really worse than NY drivers? Cool! Hehehe.... Maybe I can cause some mayhem in Manhattan! Just kidding.... I want my car back in one piece.

It's nearly impossible to park in Midtown. You'll just get a headache thinking about your car and not enjoy the pub you're in. The cheapest indoor garage I can think of is on 105th St. between Lexington and 3rd Ave. $8 for 4+ hours I think. From there you can take the 6 train on 103rd St. downtown to 59th St and walk from there if the pub is on the eastside. If it's on the westside, take the free bus transfer crosstown on 57th St. to wherever the cross street/avenue is. Midtown garages would go for $4-6 for a half hour.

But if I were you, I'd just park on the streets. It's more challenging!

I dunno if you've made this trip yet, but if you havent, just remember that within the last year, we now have these things called "Crosstown Streets". Basically if you're on one of them, you can't turn off until you get to a certain street. it's supposed to help relieve traffic, but for those that don't know about them, it causes unnecessary headaches.
