Is this true?
My friend told me that its futal to get a new exhaust system on your car, and that it decreases horsepower instead of increasing it. He said that its best to just get a muffler because stock exhaust sytems work best for the engine in your car. Is this true because, this doesnt sound right?
your friend sounds like a ricer, no offense. mufflers just make sound and dont add performance. get a magnaflow or tanabe and you will feel the difference. its common sense really, if your engine breaths better it will produce more hp...hence the intake, header, exhaust combo.
yeah sounds like a ricer to me. It's not good the just get the muffler because it does nothing but make a fart sound. But you also don't want to get a turbo exhaust for a NA car because you would lose velocity on the exhause gasses and that would make you lose hp and torque. 2.25" to 2.5" is a good sized pipe for NA cars. The reason why stock exhaust pipe is smaller is to control the sound better and for low end torque which is what you use when normally driving.
lol i dont like my muffler now, but i get compliments on it
i dont like bein referred to as a ricer blah i have a arospeed muffler, whats a good catback exhaust? or cheap but good noise exhaust i have an aem short air intake

from what i hear skunk2 will give the most hp but it is only the rear section but i dont believe that, i want the full catback so i think im going with DC SPORTS TCS, not to loud and not to soft.

well, yes and no to you all. what your friend said was part right, and so was the replies to your thread.
1. on OUR cars, which are different in a way than we're used to, a larger, aftermarket exhaust will do 2 things beside make it louder. first it will increase the flow capacity by reducing the backpressure with a smoother flow path. this in turn reduces the torque(which loves the backpressure you just lost), but gains HP because of the increased flow.
2.i believe that the best pipe sizing for us to get a good balance between HP and torque, is about 2" or 2.25" at most. for example my friend has a Baretta with a Quad4, he wanted a dual exhaust on it, which will reduce backpressure even further. so i recommended he have use a stock 2" size pipe all the way back to the split to keep the backpressure up, then after the split, for looks and HP, go as large as he wants, maybe 2.5, or so.
3.what your friend suggested was maybe a little on the rice side but not totally, it was rice because its the cheap way to get the "racing sound", but it was also a little rational because it has the same effect as what i suggested to my friend, it keeps the backpressure up.
am i wrong? anyone disagree?

Eternal i dont think your wrong and i dont disagree with you, i was just saying that i wanna full cat back, but with what your saying is to stay almost stock the whole way back before the rear section maybe a little bigger but not much at all, and then just get a rear section with what ever size so that way you dont loose out on the take off that much,
