go to the Poconos
screw the Jersey Shore. everyone's always bragging "Weeee! I'm going to the shore this weekend!"
if you're absolutely set on the beach, check out Bradley beach. Not too many good sites at AtlaCity, but Cape May is a little better. Expect $10/hr fees and VERY tight spaces and little room on the beach, this time of year.

Who actually pays money just to go out onto the beach? Whenever I stop off at home in FL I park in the free lot at Ron Jons and walk 100 feet to the free beach that has a lifeguard on duty in the summer.
^ and that's just the parking! some of the better beaches you have to pay to swim in that section. Its weird you can be in one area and the water is nice and clear, but a few yards down it's all murky and seaweedy.
