Drove a Prelude Today...
Well, hate to say this.. but the fastest car I ever drove was my dad's Toyota Previa van so it was kinda cool being able to drive my friend's 00 Prelude.
It was automatic / had the + - thingy. The damn car was too short, I had to duck to drive.. and the car ride was bumpy as hell. Jerky ride.. Powerwise, wasn't all that difference from a Civic.. Sure it felt a bit better driving up hills, but not enough to pay a few more thousand dollars.
I guess I'm the type that's meant for a Civic.. Actually when you think about it.. if you pull out the engine power of a Civic... the Civic is a pretty nice car (roomy, reliable, smooth (at least compared to the Prelude))IMO.

The prelude is a great car, it is heavy for how little power it got but still its a great car and would be one of my top 5 Hondas.
No headroom? Try More than the EX, it is about an inch smaller than the LX/DX though.
The ride may have been bumpy but if it was more so than your civic your friend messed his car up. The prelude has pretty good suspension and much better than our lowly civics.
Performance....like aznboysrfr said, 2 seconds faster to 60 mph....I think thats something you could feel.
I love the prelude and if I had a couple grand more laying around when I bought my car I would have bought the prelude.

Ive raced my friend's prelude automatic too (last body style) with my old 92 accord auto, and i beat it by a car length every time. Accord=140 HP Prelude=190HP And I know my old car isnt much faster than the civic.. so being the prelude is an automatic, I dont think you would notice much of a power difference, esp since the Lude weighs what? 600-800 lbs more? This is my opinion of course.

are you sure the prelude didn't have the e-brake on or was it towing a trailer?
here's the low down on the lude auto. not fast off the line, but once your moving (IE, top of 2nd gear and up). it will rip on a civic. my buddy has one and we raced. in fully auto i beat it the whole way, by about a car lenght, but in SS he went ripping by me in the top of his 2nd gear (at about 140kph). i've driven the car. it's got lots more power, but since it has an auto at low speeds it has trouble putting the power down. did you go any faster than 100mph?
The H22 is a pretty nice engine (200HP and a bunch of torque). I actually almost bought one. Two years ago, I was looking at the Prelude, a 2000 Civic si, and a 98 GSR (all used, roughly the same price). I decided that the best of those three was the GSR. That car was fast, it cornered on rails, had plenty of acceleration, and had the best looks of the three (IMO).
but hey w00 previa van .. my 1st Car and they were so ghetto that makes them a blast! I rolled it racing a civic .. needless to say around a curve a van isnt ment for. Oh well, live and learn

I belive that the 5th gen prelude has the worst auto tranny ever made by honda. It was rumored that it was first made for a acura can't rember the name anywayz. Acura had to dump it cause the dam things kept fall apart after xxmiles or after heavy sport shifting. Acura has a longer factory warrenty then hondas thats why they dumped it. The auto 5th lude is very slow and not a good gauge of the ludes true power.
Never heard of the h22's having oil burning problems. The only lude that I know of that has oil burning issues is the b21a's and some h23a's. On the b21's honda was play with cylinder lining materal and h23's. I think they did the same only for a limited number h23a but stopped.

ive owned all 3.....a 98 auto lude for 5 years......a 97 5-speed lude for 2 years...and now an 03 civic ex 5-speed.....i never once had a problem with oil consumption in either lude......
but you are correct about the ss tranny.....mine went after about 50k miles...i do know a lot of prelude owners that have lost about 2 or 3 trannies at less than 15k.....and thee auto in no way justifies the power of thee h22.....there is so much loss on bottom end...it is absolutely ridiculous...top end is a totally different story...
if you want a real feel for what that car has to offer....drive a 5-speed.....thee torque is quite impressive and in either thee auto or manuel....there's no sound like thee growl of vtec......
i wouldnt doubt that my civic could have taken thee auto lude without spray.....easily...so dont be afraid to give them a try
.......but thee lude was an exceptional car...thee excess weight made it a dream on the highway......but a b!tch when it comes to thee track and weight reduction..........

A whine? What are you talking about? Have you ever driven a Prelude before? And the NSX is a V6 with 252 or 290 hp depending on which engine you got (3.0 or 3.2). The Prelude is a 2.2L with 200hp and the vtec is far from a "whine".

......and when i think of "whine"......i think bike.....thee h22 has a much more prominate vtec then most of thee other honda series engines......hence my "growl" perspective....i wasnt implying muscle car growl.....but it makes thee driving experience well worth while HISPAnIC CAUSIn PAnIC

if you think it sounds like a growl or makes driving funer in any way then good for you but i dont think i have heard any 4 banger have a growl not a wrx not anything.
some people forget that a prelude is still very slow i dont know why some people seem to think they are fast.

they are slow...they do about a 15.5 in the 1/4 (with a good driver). A GSR is a much better buy in my opinion. The GSR will have about the same 1/4 mile times, its much lighter, easier to toss around a track, and more mods to buy.
I dont know where you guys heard that the SH was faster than the base. That is pure bull. The SH just has a torque transfer unit so that it will handle better. It doesnt have more HP or anything.
Dont be that intimidated by Preludes...it takes a good driver to get them going. My buddy had a 2000 Prelude 5-speed. We raced 4 times in the time that he owned it...i beat him 3 out of the 4. True, a good driver would have been 4 and 0 on me, but he was a really bad driver...didnt know how to launch, shifter fast, or anything. My buddy with a 97 5-speed SH is scared about my car after my swap, cause he knows it will kill him in the 1/4. But he always comes back with, "well, my car will take yours on the turns" which it will hands down.
I dont really like the VTEC on that car. I think it has the lowest redline out of all the DOHC VTEC motors out there. It peaks at like 7600rpm. If i were getting DOHC VTEC (which i am), i would want one that went up to, and above 8 grand. Maybe its just me, but i like hearing the VTEC at above 8 grand, and you just didnt get that with the prelude. The S2000...now thats nice. you cant beat VTEC at 9000rpm.

The Prelude is a sports car in it's class and the RSX is in the same class. And speaking of torque, the s2000 has 153 and the prelude has 156. And the old Si has only 111. How sad is that? Honda's definately weren't made for torque.

It only has 111 because it has a 1.6
The S2000 has 153 because it has a 2.0
The Prelude has 156 because it has a 2.2
Do you see the pattern??

Auto preludes are not that fast thats a given. But as for mods with JUN having a complete top end package for preludes and crower also having cams and now RS Machine and EF-1 there might be a surge of preludes out there looking to beat up on people.
A local guy has an All Motor 5th Gen Lude running 13.0 hes getting larger cams so he will be running in te 12's soon.
Preludes are no punks in the world of hondas VTEC engines as it stands they make a ton of torque for a 4cyl. adding mods to one tends to be a chore just because of the design of the engine the but the H22A head also flows more then a B Series head stock for stock.
An Engines Redline has nothing to do with over all performance a prelude just makes its power earlier in the rpm band because of the larger stroke. Its the same for any V8 muscle car they might not rev past 7000rpms but they are giving an earlier stronger powerband then a short stroke longer rod engine simple as that.
H22A with A H23 crank makes an intresting motor and can rev to 8k + and still make power same goes for a H22A with new cams and the redline moved up. I think you people just need to cross paths with the right H22A to realize this.
