the real JDM STi doesn't come wid a 2.5L turbo motor... instead its a 2.0L turbo........

the STi in north america produces 300hp.......
2.0L turbo is 280hp.....

u decide.....

from what i hear... the evo8 is by far a better road car than the STi, but the STi is a true bred rally racer.

I cant tell you how many WRX's ive seen blow by us in the begining of a rally only to DNF due to transmission problems before they could finish. and this is rally to, which is a little easyer on drivetrains than the 1/4 mile.

"no problem" you say...thats what warrentee is for, but their is a clause in the WRX warrentee that only allows three transmission replacements before the repair is on your dime. $$$$$

its not just about looks (or lack thereof) and horsepower
Wow such an educated post...

How is the EVO engine higher reving? I thought both redlined at 7K. Could be wrong but...
Anyhoo if I get a STi first thing is to flash the ECU for 8K action as long as it has the same valvesprings as the Japanese motor. Bottom end is perfectly fine with teh extra RPM.

I also fail to grasp how the EVO's suspension is any better. More complex? YES. Better. No.

The 6spd in the subaru is hands down the better gearbox. Tough as nails, Std with front LSD, DCCD, and the US version might have the tranny cooler provisions built in, so if you want to go road racing you don't have to worry about the diffs cooking off the tranny. I admit 99.995% of the people will never need the added stuff in the STi 6spd, but heck its "free" so why complain.

I also don't know what rally situations you are talking about, but I doubt you do either so thats ok.
