I don't know... but if I had to guess, it would go to the 2003 Acura CL Type S? The 2k3s dumped the traction control for a well deserved LSD.

srt-4 (turbo neon) is disgusting.....

........which means nothing when you consider that it is the fastest car for the price.

0-60 in 5.9 seconds in stock trim. WIth loads of MOPAR parts on the way. it owns.

okay, and civic si is not more capable than the Mazdaspeed Protege or the SE-R Spec V.

You guys are forgettign about the Eclipse GS-T and Talon Tsi. Those cars have soo much power. 4G63 baby

BTW...When modded these cars are capable of over 500hp. Over 600 on race gas. If you could get that to the ground it's soo nice. My friends GSX is mind boggling. We beat a 350Z!

I don't think there's a stock FWD car out there that runs quicker than 14.0ish like the SRT-4. The Maxima is pretty close however....

Best handling? That I'd have to think on, as it's not as clear cut as the 1/4 mile times, probably the Protege or the Celica now that the neon ACR is out of production.

Those aren't on dealers lots anymore, which i believe was the original topic of discussion. The newest examples are already 3 years old now.....

The Neon might win in straight line performance, but handling... ? Doesn't it kinda lack in that department since it currently does not have an LSD?

Out of curiousity, what about the Cosworth Ford Focus RS? Doesn't that thing have more horsepower than the Neon? Although it's not in America, it is front-wheel drive. I'd throw out the new ITR but I don't think anyone knows much about it to make a decent argument. (Although I'd like to keep this topic on cars USDM, if you know, then share.)

By the way, cars out of production do not qualify. I'm looking for the most recent. The winner would obviously be the ITR if it were still in production. It's a lil' slower than the SRT-4 but it doesn't best it in the handling department. The SRT-4 seems based on straight-line performance, while the ITR of course is known for it's ability running circles around a race track.

Edit:

I haven't heard much about the Mazda6 lately, but Neonmike you put the Protege above that? Hmm.

Reason why I chose the CL-S was I was told it does 13s stock... and is for a fact, a great handling car.

I would have to agree........ those mazdas are sick with the Unibody Frame.........

And yes even tho you don't want to admit (I don't either fellas), The Turbo Neon is hella Fast! Faster than anything FWD out there, right now. C'mon Honda.......don't let someone take your FWD title (ITR).

An LSD isin't the end-all be-all of handling. While it does suffer at the autocross, the SRT-4 would be very competent around a road course. Things like the 11" brakes and the aerodynamics, etc. hint that they had more in mind that drag racing, you know?

I read somewhere that the new DC5R was the top handling FWD car in Japan, but that was last year or perhaps when the car was released in Japan (2001).

Either way, glad I got my questions answered.

Grand Prix GTP, the L67 is one of the best motors evAr. same 3.8L that is in the T-Type. With a $100 3.2" pulley and a DIY CAI you are in the mid 13's

Definitely the MazdaSpeed Protege. My local dealer has a black one with NO markup $20,500. I am so tempted. They said that I can test drive it since I'm serious about it, and they'd talk to me about trade-in value for my 2001 EX. I'm just not sure about it since my car is still pretty new. ALSO - I was looking at testing numbers and only super sports cars were fast through the slaloms that the MazdaSpeed. Only ONE Porsche was faster and the others were all slower.
