Question: Clutching and Shifting

I'm at a red light, suddenly the light turns green. I shift to first gear and slowly let out the clutch. Here is my question, When i'm shifting to second gear, do i shift from first to second right away, or can i just go on first, let my car ride for 3 seconds, then shift to second? The reason why i'm asking is because, when i do the 3 second thing, i hear a pop from underneath the car when i step on the clutch to shift, but when i shift right away (kinda seem like i'm burning the clutch) its fine (no pops). But, i could let my car ride on second gear, and shift to 3 and 4 .... no problem. Something wrong? -Andrew

Yes, definately something wrong. You should be able to stay in 1st until redline without any pops. Take it
back to the dealer.

I know with my car, sometimes when it's cold, and I shift from 1st to 2nd it will seem as if it's popping out of gear when I clutch in and push it out of gear just a little, I beleive this is because the taller gearing on first gear, and when it's cold out, it doesn't stay meshed as well i'm guessing. But I think your case is something different than this, you never mentioned how it felt when you shifted, did it seem like it was being pushed out of 1st, or is it just making a popping noise. Either case, i'd take it to the dealer and be sure to show them what's wrong with it.

I thought so, because i drove my friends 300zx, and it didn't do that, just thought (hoping nothing wrong with my car) Honda's were just like that. Damn, but would it be covered under warranty or would they give me crap (saying stuff like its cause i suck at driving stick)? Plus, i have the 100,000 mile warranty. If that even matters! What does 100,000 mile warranty do? anything special or in particular? Thanks

When i shift to second after the pop from clutching to shift to second, it doesn't push it out, but its a struggle to put it into second gear. Sounds like shattered metal noises. But it does gear into second, just i hate hearing that noise

I ahve had some different probs with my MT that i took it to the dealer for. my second gear keeps popping out and they said its cause too many/much quick hard shifting and that im also revving it too high! i told them that i rev it to like 4grand before i shift and they said thats to much and i should be shifting much earlier. in response to that i say, well thats where you can feel the power of the engine or whatever and they just said the same thing again, shifitin too late. %uckin honda.... but anyways - shattered metal noises are alwasy bad, i would definatly take it someplace to get fixed

With that description it sounds as if something is definitly wrong, I'd take it to your dealership, it should be covered by warrenty, and the 100,000 mile warrenty means that they will replace anything that fails in your car for any reason except for normal wear, or failure to maintain your car. The 100,000 mile part means that they will replace these parts untill 100,000 miles have gone by.

So was your problem still covered under warranty and did they fix it, or did they clain they didn't have to because they though you were driving it to hard?

AR will become famous soon enough
sounds like somethings wrong.
when you go from first to second, do you make sure youre not mashing down on the clutch while gasing (in between shifts)?

i know for a fact i can go up to like 3500 rpm and do a smooth shift into second. get it checked

I think what's he is saying is: Accelerating in 1st, release gas and let the engine slow the car for 3 seconds, push clutch *pop*, and shift to 2nd.

Correct?

My car does the same thing. Not really a *pop*, but a hard disengagement of the clutch. It does it in any gear, but is really only noticeable in 1st and 2nd. I think it's because the clutch is locked to the flywheel and trying to slow the tranny/wheels. The increased "tension" causes the transaxle to jerk when the clutch is released.

I think you might have an engine and/or tranny mount problem. As you start to accelerate your engine is making torque and those torque are most pronounced at 1st gear, you unload and load torque an engine as you shift i.e....unload when you disengage clutch and load when you engage clutch. The job of engine mount is to absorbe engine movements and bad or loose engine mount will make shift uneasy or "nervous" so take it to dealer and tell em to check all mounts.
