I haven't done any 1/4 mile runs yet, but here is my $0.02 on launching. Our cars don't have good low-end torque, so dumping it at 2500 I think would bog it down too much. I think that revving up like you said to 5000 and feathering the clutch a bit would be that fastest way to launch. That puts lots of wear on the clutch though. As far as burning out... that is only for drag slicks. I think some people do a quick one just to clear off any debris off the tires, but sitting there smoking your street tires with the E-brake on will just make them melt which makes your traction worse - it works on drag slicks, but not regular street tires.
So what's your time?

BTW... driving skill has a HUGE influence on how fast your car goes. Ofcourse there is a limit to how fast you can push it with just skills. But I raced some dork in a Mustang GT on a track, he told me he had the car for one month. It was a 2000 GT Stang, I roasted that guy, all his friends were laughing. Take a little time to practice, then if you got a bad run atleast you know it wasnt because your a crappy driver.

You're gonna have to just go out and play with it a little. I don't think there's a "right way" to do it. Go out and play with it see what works. Not everyone is going to do it the same. I've found that feathering off it at 3500 works pretty well, which is different from what others have already said, and I'm sure others who post after this are gonna say completely different things...
How high you can launch is also gonna depend on how sticky your tires are and what your clutch is. If you've got a better than stock clutch, it's gonna help. So will sticky tires. Trying to launch on the stock tires is a royal pain in the *** no matter what you try...

born2xLr8 will become famous soon enough
I think the rpm launching point depends on what mods you have on your car. Performance mods, that is. When I was stock, I usually released at 2800 but after exhaust and low end torque loss, I released at about 5000.

depending on tires too, stock tires 2800 or 3000, aftermarket you can lunch a little higher without lossing traction but keep it under 3600

what does it mean to feather the clutch? are you talking about keeping the clutch at the point when the car starts to roll foward slowly and begins to engage the engine?

Yeah, it's a slower release, than say, just popping off the pedal. I'm not sure if I'm right, but launching @ 5K, and feathering, what happens if you feather too fast? Wouldnt the tires and clutch go up in smoke?
