Double clutchin, what the hell is it?
i feel like a retard aking this but no ones ever told me what it is. i dont race so i've never had to use it. can somone please explain this concept od double cluutching to me.
say youre drivin at like 65 in 5th gear...press the clutch in, let clutch out, rev it up, press clutch back in, then throw it into third and go hard...supposedly it doesnt work in our cars because of the kind of clutch we have (not really sure). my uncle has had a couple of m3's and he taught me how to do it in his old one which he raced a lot at MidOhio.
i remember reading on howstuffworks.com about double clutching. You use it when you shift to a lower gear. You step on the clutch, shift to neutral, step off the clutch, step on the gas and raise the rpms to where you think it's gonna be when you go to the lower gear, step on the clutch and shift to the lower gear. You used to have to double clutch on cars without synchronizers, but it's not necessary with our civics.

to my understanding there 3 different actions used by cars with Standard transmissions that can and are refered to as Double Clutching.
1. Old School......... IN the old days, when Men were men and cars were cars, we're talking 50' and back. To shift between gears, you had to first put the cluch(1st cluch) in and then put the car in nuturaland let the cluch out, then you had to put the cluch in (2nd cluch) and put it in to the next gear. My parents 53 chevy pickup was like this.
2. New School misconseption. Double Clutching to down shift. this is when you wnat to down shift for cornering/racing. starting in a higher gear, you depress the clutch shift to a lower gear, and rev the motor up to match the engin and trannie's RPM's and then let go of the clutch. This is actually called Heel Toe shifting.
3 New School Street racing. I'v never personally done this so I can only roughly describe it. durring a race, you would press in the clutch and rev up the motor, but keep it in the same gear. the Idea is to get the car engin in to its Power band. Im not shure if they fether the clutch or pop it.

I just dont see the use for it with our cars. It's even stated that it doesn't make a difference due to us having synchros. So I guess I'll "granny shift" all I want and know my tranny/clutch will make it through another year

The only reaons to use double clutching in our civics is to break the tranny. Double clutching is completely useless with the syncros. If you're downshifting, just rev-match and go. It's that easy.

Anyone remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer goes to L A, he's picked up by a woman trucker and she lets him drive because Kramer says he knows how to double clutch. Well if you remember that one, Kramer ends up grinding the gears all to he// . Hence the phrase Double Clutching which means to line up the gears between shifts so it doesn't grind. Syncros have fixed all those problems.
Double Clutching is still used on trucks (semi's)....they don't have synchro's because the synchros aren't made well enough to stand up to the rigorous driving that they do. They put 750000 miles on those tranny's and the synchros would have had to be replaced about 10 times with how those things drive.
As for The Fast and the Furious...I liked the movie until Vin Diesel opened his damn mouth. It ruined the whole thing for me. Cars were cool though

HERE YOU GO, HERE IS WHAT YOU WANT http://www.happytogether.com/318ti/n...ing/index.html
i know ive replied to this topic a few time before. but it was bout 6 months or so ago, so.....
heres the short version
double clutching is:
youre driving in first gear.
you push in the clutch
put gear in neutral
let out on clutch
push in clutch
shift to second
let out on clutch to engage second
and so on and so forth for the remaining gears
i only know this because i know how to double clutch, i used to drive a 81 ford flatbed that weighed 13,000 lbs it had 12 gears and it ran like sh-t, had to double clutch it all the time.
you dont double clutch on a civic. you could, but i dont know why you would, cause it wouldnt do any good, understood?

This may be a weird question... but wouldnt it waste time to take it out of gear, release clutch, tap gas, press clutch, shift into gear? Isnt it faster and easier just to step into clutch, tap gas and shift into gear at the same time, then release clutch?
I also was wondering, someone in the previous page wrote 3 different double clutch techniques.. I learned one that was pretty much for drag only, where if you come off the line and dont have enough RPM's just step into clutch and tap gas and drop clutch. And of course there is the other 1 for proper engine speed/road speed/gear speed optimisation on downshifts. I tend to use it fairly often in the snow..... engine braking really helps in the snow.
