ID'ing an EX head

How can i identify a civic ex head? What's the code? Thanks for the help.

I have an Ex sooo, the code is D17A2. Look for VTEC on top of the motor, but be careful it can also be an HX Civic. Either way I guess this is a start, anyone else feel free to add.

well, that's just the wire cover that says vtec. i was hopping for info along the lines of identifing marks and such.

That engine code is stamped on the block, I think near the header/exhaust manifold.

As for identifying the head... I don't think there's any way to tell externally whether it's an EX or HX head, if you don't have the block to go with it. (hence looking for the D17A2 stamp)
