The only CVT I've driven was in a Mini Cooper, but I thought it was pretty sweet.
As far as modding goes, the only part of it that might not put up with it so well would be the belts that drive the transmission. If you could find a way to reinforce the belts or abandon belts (and go chains) all together, then it might work out better. I believe I remember reading about someone with a Civic CVT that had done it...
BTW, CVT = Continuously Variable Transmission. Available on the Civic HX and Hybrid.

My friend has a 99 or 2000 civic ex with this transmission. He has it modded with I/H/E (no cat) and it's very fast. Can beat my 02 any time.

CVTs allow you to be in your peak power band at all times which is the most efficient way. The Audi 1.8T AV FWD has that available as well. The only thing I wouldn't like is losing the shift pop feeling every time I switch gears. Makes a 5 speed so much fun, why give it up?

Yeah, driving one is kind of strange. I guess that motor in the Mini makes good torque and decent HP at around 2500 RPM, so it accelerated up to 2500 RPM, with the pedal most of the way down, and stopped. It's kind of like driving a go-kart or something, where you keep accelerating, but the motor seems to be at the same speed. If you really floor it, it'll kick up to maybe 3500 or so, and then stay there till you back off. I'm not sure about the Civics, but I know the Minis and also I believe the A4 CVT have a "sport shift" mode, where you can manually select your "gear", which works like basically any other manumatic tranny. It's kind of fun, if they would have offered one in the EX I would have considered it.
Here's comes the CVT General (that would be me ) to clear up misconceptions and questions:
izod: If you do a search you will find some threads that discuss what you are looking for. There are some members in this forum who have a CVT and have successfully modded their engine. One of them even uses nitrous. Supposedly the belt can't handle too much extra power (at least in the case of pre-2001 Honda CVTs). You may find more info from my HX club on Yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hondacivichxcvt), or by finding HX CVT members on the 7th Gen site (hint: browse through the Member's Rides section or use the search tool) and asking them questions. I don't know much about mods and CVTs but I can help point you in the right direction.
VTEC01EX: The CVT is also available on the Civic GX (which uses compressed natural gas instead of gasoline) and on the Honda Insight.
gearbox: The EX trim level has never come with the CVT as an option.
jro: The HX CVT has been around since 1996, not 1999.
JohnnyLee: Yes, it is all that good. All that good and more. I think it does marvelously. Definitely underrated. That's just my opinion.
MadWheel: Unless you're used to a manual, you'll probably get over the lack of a "shift pop feeling" pretty quickly. I'm used to driving automatics (never drove stick) and I like the smooth acceleration much better than what I get from a conventional automatic. I love accelerating from a traffic light and speeding up smoothly while the car in the next lane speeds up, shifts and slows a bit, and speeds up, shifts and slows, and speeds up again. That's just my take.
