Shifting in an automatic

Shifting in an automatic
I was wondering, if I occasionally shifted my automatic like a manual, for fun, would that be harmful to my transmission. Heres how it goes: I hit the gas in drive, hold it so it doesnt change till it almost redlines. As its nearing the redline I pull up on the shift button, let go of the gas, and pull it straight back to 2. I drive it in 2 till i nears the redline then push it to three as i let up on the gas. Repeat back into drive to shift into 4th.
I've done it a couple times, and dont hear anything unsual, or seem to have any problems. What do you think? Heres the shift setup if you dont know

Rep Power: 0 just a question. I didnt buy a manual because Im moving to Boston, and if you;ve ever driven in boston, you know why you wouldnt want an automatic. Hey overall Im happy driving a automatic when i dont feel like driving just for teh sake of driving.

A friend with an 01 Civic did the same thing to his auto. He went thru 3 trannies, and got rid of the car at 25k. Not a slick idea

dont do that lol, you will sooon start having problems like i did... i still do it when im goin say 50 and sum1 flys past me i drop to second and catch up but really bad idea, very bad for tranny like the guy said 3 traniies hopefully covere on waranty [IMG]i/expressions/demon.gif[/IMG]

Rep Power: 0 just curious..wut bout shiftin from D to d3...cuz i occasionally do that..when my car wont go any faster...and my pedal is all the way down..and when i shift it to d3...it gets a bit faster..but not by much...is that harmful as well

Rep Power: 0 i dont think youll have a problem doing that derrick...i think it says in the manual that when you are going uphill and you need some more power to shift it down to D3 . . . im stupid because ill be going 45 and shift down to d3 so my engine helps my car slow down...i dont do it anymore tho hehe

Rep Power: 0 i dont know if this is okay or not, but if i want to go fast, i usually start off on D3, and when i hit about 40 or 50 mph, i'll let off the gas and shift to D. i'm not sure if that's okay or not, i used to do that a lot, but then i stopped, sometimes when i have the sudden urge to do it, i'll do it. but so far everythings good and i've kept my adrenaline rushes to a minimum! i'm proud to say i've never done a neutral drop on my car, cause i did that on my previous car, and i'm pretty sure i messed up the tranny, but since i got my civic, i've been trying to take care of it. if that means no neutral drops, then so be it, i'd rather keep my car for a longer period of time, than try to squeel my tires and ruin my tranny.[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]

This is why they invented the autostick. So basically, choosing a Civic was your mistake. Not choosing the auto tranny. If you knew you needed an auto for traffic reasons, and wanted to shift gears, why didn't you look for cars with manumatics? Isn't the RSX available with one? I know for sure the VW 1.8T's are all available with manumatics. I guess you didn't do your homework before you bought, or you didn't know autosticks existed or something, but its not the smartest thing in the world to shift a plain old slushbox, unless you want to destroy it fast.

I am not sure about the D to D3 switch. Just as long as you don't do it over 75-80mph (Engine would redline in D3 at these speeds) you should be fine.
Also I do not believe taking your foot off the pedal, when switching the drive gear is necessary, but if it helps ease your mind so be it. [IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]

Rep Power: 0 I still don't get why people insist on trying to shift the car hard in a way it wasn't meant to operate...you're totally asking for trouble (and a new tranny) by doing so.
Also, I have no idea what you mean Validus about how difficult it is in Boston to have manual...I have had my car here for a year now and there's no problem whatsoever. Mind you there are backups where it's a bit of a pain, but no worse than anything else. I mean, it's not New York City or anything like that.
I suggest not messing around with it. You're not going to press yourself back in your seat with a 7thgen, and if you're ever caught trying to neutral drop or anything in a race, I'm sure you'd be laughed at...it's not worth the risk of your tranny tropping out and having to pay through the nose just to one-up the guy next to you. But that's just me....
