discussion on RAM AIR - myth?
http://www.3si.org/portal/forums/sho...highlight=myth
ah. not done reading. quite long. made some valid and sound points though.
not surprised. but er.. still not done reading.
okay here. jumped to conclusion, and I quote:
"Ram air is a myth because it does not exist, for the following reasons:
- Air is incompressible at any automobile speed., meaning that the kinetic energy of the air cannot be used to compress the air and raise the static pressure.
- The “ram air” nozzles commonly employed on automobiles tend to be the wrong shape. A divergent nozzle is required for ram air. Straight-profile scoops cannot provide a ram air effect. "

All it truly does is eleminate intake restriction..because of the air velocity into the "scoop" the air is not pressurized...but it is far far less restricted..

Or you could get an entirely non-fuctional one like on Mustangs!
I think someone should find out how much we could gain with a hood scoop on our cars. I photoshopped a WRX and a Celica scoop onto our cars a while ago. It didn't look too bad.

Here's a serious reply. Why is he whining about compression? I thought ram scoops were to get MORE air, not compressed air. Is this wrong? It's like how an intake = more air than stock. Hood scoop = more air than under hood intake. Is this wrong?

Pnoy3lers saying the truth man, it works for me......... I cant understand you guys why will I use a Ram Air if it does not work? Is it hard to believe? Man, it is already tried and tested here in the Phil. for years. Pls for those who gives no good comments to Ram Airs you dont have the right to give conclusions unless you have one Try making one and see for yourself the difference

Since I'm the one who said "whinning" I guess that was directed at me. I wasn't trying to be annoying, so let me clarify. As I briefly read the post in the link, it seemed his problem was with RAM air scoops not compressing the air. I was never aware that they were supposed to compress air? Does an intake compress air? I don't think so (it might, but I don't think so). I thought a ram scoop was just to get more air than you could get with a traditional under-the-hood intake. So in that case, it's like he was trying to prove something false that isn't supposed to be true in the first place?
Yeah. I'm actually interested in the whole hood scoop thing, so I was trying to have a serious discussion. But since I don't know much about hood scoops, or cars in general, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

as I stated originally..all that it does is virtually eliminate any intake restriction..instad of the intake pipe having a vacuum effect..it's neutral...but not pressurised (not PSI of boost)....just makes the engine operate more efficiently...instead of sucking in air and creating negative pressure it allows more air to freely flow into the cylinders..it has the same effect as velocity stack ITB's..
Thats a customize 4-2-1 header my friend. Our chief mechanic (Group leader) gave me the specs on my headers. He told me that 4-1 will not work and would only slow down my car. As far as I remember he used a calculator and a piece of paper doing the specs he asked for my cut off and other things in my car and he came up with these specs - the size of the tube is 1-5/8 and he gave me the lengths in each part of the 4-2-1(Sorry I forgot the length of each) and the size of my pipings is 2 inch in diameter and I have a 24 inch powerflow at the end of it. It works for me very well. I tried it with other cars (7th gens) with different headers and I was happy with the results I trust my mechanic Kuya Van, as we call him because he's been into racing since he was a kid He has the title here in the Phil. as the " Fastest All-Motor SOHC "
