Rep Power: 0 Ahhhhhh, dang mis-shift!
Dang it! I was on my way back home from my girlfriend's house last night and I was on I-75, passing through Atlanta. I was really tired and wasn't paying attention, but I was in a lane that was exit only and when I realized it, I had to punch it hard to get out of the way of the traffic and get back in. To make a long story short, I wasn't thinking (once again, I was really tired after so much driving last night) and I dropped it into 2nd gear and stepped on the gas for a split-second...at 75 mph!!!!!!!!! My tach needle shot way off the gauge for a second . I quickly corrected myself and turned off my radio so I could listen to the engine. I wasn't getting any rattling or any dubious noises, but I am still skeptical. I need this engine to last me a while...and my transmission. I had been driving for over 2 hours already when this happened, so the engine was warmed up fine. How many of you have made a mistake with shifting gears like that? It's pretty frightening.

Rep Power: 286 Odds are your fine since we have a rev limiter. But yah never know... maybe take is slow for a while and see if anything seems wrong. Later if everything checks out, start driving normal again.

Rep Power: 340 I mis-shifted once in my dad's old car. It was a 6-speed, I was in fifth, and didn't realize how hard you had to push it to the right to get in sixth. So, needless to say, I hit fourth. But I wasn't at too high of RPMs, and he traded the car in a week later. So there wasn't any problem. I've never made another mistake in shifting.

Rep Power: 0 you still could do a # on that engine EVEN with a rev limiter. my friend's S2000 bent the valves downshifting from 5th to 2nd when he was looking to grab a hold of 4th--ouch!!! rev limiter only helps when accelerating in a gear -- not when you stick it into a gear like that

Rep Power: 291 Try shifting aggressivly from 1st to second.
If you hear a grunt like grinding sound, you burned up
your sychros...take it to the dealer and get a new tranny.
That's what I had to do.

Rep Power: 395 Yeah, I did it on purpose once. Going past the rev limiter in 2nd gear. My car screamed like a beast. Good acceleration too. Only lasted for a second or so though. Nothing wrong with my engine. I'm sure that it would take a good minute or two at higher rpm's before you noticed bad things happening.

Rep Power: 0 I blew a K20A2 in my old Type S going to 4th and instead grabbed 2nd.
2 bent valves and a blown cylinder...have them check it out next time your car is serviced just to be safe

it happens to us though. one thing i did that going like 45, but i mean the car only jumpred to like 5500 rpm. reguardless ihad a good excuse: i had a cast/splint over my right hand, which made it hard for shifting. this was when i first bought the car.

Rep Power: 0 what do you mean for how long? How long was the car engaged in gear?
literally a second- two seconds at most. Clutch in, shift to forth, release clutch, oh **** grabbed 2nd, tach spins past 9, hit clutch, engine dead.
9191rpm@69mph is what the ecu said it died at

Rep Power: 0 If you revved way too much the valves might have hit the pistons and got bent, you might also have some piston ring damage but that is less likely. If any of the lower block bearings were messed up it will probably be a gradual failure. Best thing to do is buy or rent a compression tester and do a compression test. It will let you know if you have bent valves, or bad piston rings.
