Article on why automatics are better...

If it's been posted before, sorry. Haven't been here lately.

Technically speaking.

The end result of this argument is all I care about.

Everyone already knows all that crap in the article, the only arguement I have for owning is a stick shift is it is FUN!

EDIT: And the part about it keeping your attention is true for me, the only times I have ever almost fallen asleep at the wheel was in my dad's auto.

I've had trouble staying awake even in my car (which is a manual) on a long trip. It'd be no different than an automatic to me by cruising in the highest gear on the freeway. But maybe in a city, I'd be more awake having to manually shift up if that's what you mean.

I don't even think about shifting anymore...it just happens. Like my brain has turned my right arm and left leg into it's own sort of automatic tranny.

FuN fUn and more FUN.

About the stress on the engine when down shifting, wouldn't that have the same affect in an automatic since it "down shifts" as you come to a stop? I am sure what they meant is, it's not as stressful on the engine.

my hardpoint between the two comes at drivetrain loss. automatics eat up more power between the engine and the wheels, and also always weigh more. period.

It depends on how high you bring your RPMs up in the lower gear in a manual... and to improve braking performance, they're gonna have to be higher than an automatic's downshift.

That's the stupidest article I've ever read. The writer must be a true dumbass. For example, that one part about how people feel as awake in automatics as in manuals, NOT TRUE. How can he say that? Driving a stick forces the driver to pay more attention. I always feel like sleeping when i drive an auto. STICK SHIFT FO LIFE. automatics are for the women and elderly and disabled.

P.S. Did you know Tracy Mcgrady doesn't know how to drive stick? he bought a lamborghini that comes only in stick and had to change the transmission because he didn't know how to drive a manual. what a loser.

Oh hail the great debater!
It's a "stupid article" just because you disagree with one thing? It may be true that you or a few other people fall asleep while driving an automatic, it does not mean that the majority of people will.
Also, the only argument you have against an automatic is that it is for "women and elderly and disabled." Where did you get that fact? He has a whole page to back up his argument and you have that?

The thing about automatics is that they dont provide the same feedback and feel as a manual, especially for those who want more control over the powerband. Ask any real racer or true sportscar enthusiast and they'll most likely drive a stick. That and typically a manual tranny will have less problems also over an automatic since its not as complexed.

Automatics are faster than manuals. If you have a car pushin 600HP and you put a 6 speed in it and 4 or 5 speed auto in it they auto will run a better track time. Dont get me wrong I would never get an auto in a sporty car but when I build my racecar it will definitly have an auto (sort of, manual valve body).

HEY NOOB, its not one thing. I was using that as an example. That's why I typed "FOR EXAMPLE" indicating that it's just ONE of the examples of how the writer is a dumbass. I'm not gonna write a whole page against his argument. I don't even like to write a page for my writing class. you're just mad because i said automatics are for the women, elderly, and disabled; and you dont want to claim any of those three titles.

i don't think he was flat out saying automatics are better, I think he was saying a lot of the arguments for stick aren't as relevant as they used to be. but most of us buying a civic, and most people in general, really don't even make those arguments anymore. we just prefer a stick for our own driving pleasure.

I hate it when I get ready to make a call on the cell and have to switch hands because I'm about to shift. Or steer with my left hand with a cup or bottle in it. But that's something you get good at or used to. and I really hate driving a stick when the freeway is maxed-out bumper to bumper. otherwise, a stick for me. what this guy is doing is just an editorial on why he thinks auto is better and frankly...he is very mistaken. drivetrain loss is my first problem with autos. and stick drivers are more in tune with their car. you get a better feel for what your car can and cant do. also, having an automatic makes people lazy. america doesnt need more lazy people. lazyness leads to the mind wandering off, like when you just need only 50% of your extremities to operate the car (1 hand, 1 leg) then people are usually going to do other distracting things with the other hand. i have never seen a female stick driver putting on makeup...screwing around, etc cause you gotta actually pay attention to a number of things that you dont have to in an auto. oh and btw...fraga...its not booby, its BEWBIE!! from my own opinion as a AT driver, i'd much rather have a MT. why?

1. fun factor. i've driven my friend's MT cars, and its so much more fun
2. full control. you pick what gear and when to go into gear
3. weight. AT are heavier
4. complex. AT are so complex, it'll be a bitch to get it rebuilt. much easier to rebuild MT
5. powerloss. less power is loss between the engine n the wheels
6. cheaper. my AT was about 900~1000 more expensive than the MT
7. double clutch. i duno, fast and the furious told me so

Most of that article does apply to vehicles with more than 250 ft/lbs of torque. I don't think 4 cylinders will ever get an automatic that compares with a manual.

that's funny. now people will think his lambo is a kit car. i also notice that most of the celebrities on mtv cribs can't drive stick since they own mostly mercedes and ferraris with the f1 tranny.

The advantages of a Standard trany basically apply to racing. being able to upshift and downshift when needed are of great importantce in racing. Auto's just dont have that flexability. I'v also driven many of the Tiptronic? auto trannys and have found only 2 companys that have done it right. Audi and BMW. just my $.02.

xHoteKx, I hope you're joking about the Double Clutch crap.

comparing automatic transmision and manual transmision is just two darn hard, they are two completely different things doing the same thing...and it all depends on the car it's in

anyway! since this is a civic site...MT is a better choice for us than Auto's, because...slow civic....+ automatic transmision = SLOWER, and that's all we care about...speed

let me ask Michael Schumacher how he just blew the competion off this season on his automatic completely electronic F2002 car and I'll answer you what he told me...

the point of this thread is:
1) slow car with auto's suck
2) fast reliable car with auto's can outperform a manual

in the end...it's all about the driver...

my 2 cents...

it's all about usage of an engine's power band. i almost got into an accident when i borrowed my bro's car which was an auto, while stuck in a traffic i noticed that next lane was open so i hit the gas and changed lane hoping my tranny will down shift, but darn thing stayed in gear!!!!! and there i was driving 20mph while 18wheeler honking and giving me an high beam. even in traffic i LOVE my manual tranny, i can just down shift and hit the gas and i'm there. and other annoying thing about auto is they "hunt" gears when you go up hill. ofcourse auto is convenient and easy to operate, but it just don't know how to use the engine's power efficiently. so stick is better fit for my life.
