From what I've you heard you ask the insurance company to give you a check for what the damages are going to cost and you get it fixed yourself. So if your front bumper gets crack and hood from an accident you would ask for a check for the cost of the 2 items and they give you the price of the OEM parts and you get the difference if it's less and you pay the difference if it's more, this is what my friend told me.

According to allstate insurance, all they do is provide you the check to cover teh cost of damages and labor to fix it. If you want an aftermarket part instead of a stock one, you jsut ask for a separate check for that specific part and use that towards the purchase of that one part. that way then the body shop calls your insurance and tells them that the check isnt enough to cover the charges, all they have to do is write the body shop another check to cover the difference. Whe i got rearended, the original estimate came out to 550 bucks for parts and labor. (Allstate wanted to repair my broken bumper and brand new rear lip!!!!) But after talking to the claims adjuster, the body shop totalled out the damages to nearly 1600 bucks including the replacement bumper and lip, and the paint for the new bumper. Checked my rear suspension since he hit my wheel, and i even got a bonus 100 dollar cosmetic adjustment check since he did hit my aftermarket wheel.
The insurance company will usually only pay the price of OEM parts. Anything extra you have to pay for. It works out if the aftermarket parts are cheaper then the OEM parts (example... a carbon fiber hood is cheaper than a stock hood - especially since the stock hood has to be painted) So then it really works out for you. Usually the insurance company will send out an adjuster to check out the damage and they'll give you a quote, thats fully broken down into each little thing they could possibly have to pay for. (If you go to a shop that the insurance company refers you to and/or uses often then you could get lucky and have the estimate of parts and labor jacked up so that you can get the aftermarket parts you want w/o paying out of your pocket for them. but some insurance companies won't budge after they've quoted you on parts and labor) From there you take the quote to the shop where you want to get the parts and have the work done and then they do the work and submit the paperwork to the insurance company so they can get paid.
