Gear Ratios for Civic 7th gen LX and EX
Hi all,
I tried searching here, and also looking on Honda web page, but nobody has the gear ratios for 7th gen Civic LX and EX
Based on gear ratios of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and the final gear ratio, I can plot some graphs and determine the optimal shifting points if I can find a dyno graph too.
Anybody.....

The Ex ratios are the same as in japan so go to the japanese honda site and they will tell you. www.honda.co.jp. You will need a translator just go to altavista.com. The rev limiter on the Ex is 7000 Not sure about the LX
1st: LX: 3.461, EX: 3.142
2nd: 1.869
3rd: 1.241
4th: 0.969
5th: LX: 0.710, EX: 0.756
Rev: 3.230
Final Reduction: LX: 4.111, EX: 4.411

Can someone answer me this? Are the EX coupe gear ratio's different from the EX sedan?
I ask because I raced against my friend with i/h/e and cat-converter when I just have an intake. I have the coupe, he has the sedan, both EXs. We ran twice and I had 1 perfect launch and 1 near perfect launch. When we raced, by the time I was out of 1st gear, I was nearly a full car length ahead of him.
He told me the gear ratios in the EX coupe are shorter than the sedan's. Can anyone verify this for me? [IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/IMG]

And besides, if the coupe's gear ratios were shorter, the sedan would actually beat you off of the line. But once you get into late 2nd, early 3rd gear, you would start to pull on him.
This is all a moot point anyways since the engine and transaxle are identical between the coupe and sedan.

Basically, your friend doesn't know how to launch his car. That's all that happened.
EDIT: I see the weight numbers have changed for 2003. The coupe used to be about 2550 and the sedan was like 2564 or something similar to that. I wonder why the gap has opened up so much more for 2003?

Once before we raced from a 40MPH roll up to about 80MPH and by the end of the race I was 1 car length ahead of him. I could hear us shift gears simultaneously now that I think of it. For that race, he had I/H/E (custom exhuast) while I had just an exhaust (Skunk2).

Then again, the coupe could really be faster. I don't think so as everything is pretty much the same besides the obvious.
My best guess is that you are a pretty good driver and he isn't. Simple as that if you ask me.
Lastly, what you ought to do is this: switch cars and race again, if you trust him with your baby. LOL I would be very interested in hearing how that turns out. So, when you get a chance, drive his and see what happens. My vote is own you no matter what car you're in...Be absolutely certain you let me know what happens if switch cars and race though...ok..pm if needed..

Freeing up the airflow in and out of the engine does eat up the low-end torque. It shifts the curves upward and to the right. I feel like I am in econ class...
However, a good driver can compensate for this. It's all in the launch. If you can get a good launch and not bog, a stock will loose aganst a vic with i/h/e everytime - all other variables held constant. Once out of first, the rpms stay high which is exactly where the i/h/e combo adds the power.
It's just much easier for the inexperienced driver, anyone for that matter, to get a good launch off a stock car than one with bolt-ons.
Just remember this: i/h/e adds top-end power at the expense of low-end torque. A stock vic will be easier to launch and maybe just a hair quicker off the line. however, after 1st gear the engine will stay in the upper rpms and will be fighting aganst restriction for the rest of the race. The bolt-on vic will be harder to launch and maybe a hair slower out of first, but will be in the upper rpms for the rest of the race where the bolt-ons shine. So, the bolt-ons sacrifice bottom-end but you are only using the bottom end for a second as you launch...hope that makes sense...
