i know in MD and VA if you go to class it removes 5 points. you should just not pay the ticket, go to court, plead guilty with explaination (if you have one). and beg for just the fine and no points. Sometimes they will cut you some slack. But most of the time the drop a point and lower the fine. It's worth it when it comes to insurance. Also see if based on the completion of a court appointed defensive driving class, the points and stuff be dropped. This class will also lower your insurance.
Good luck.
I go to court soon too. But I am getting off scott free. He gave me a failure to obey traffic signs ticket and I went and checked and Not only did he say i was doing 50 in a 35, the last sign a mile and a half away was for 40. and the next sign for 35 is 1/4 mile ahead of where I got pulled over. So A) there was no sign to not obey, and B) he ran a red light without his lights to harrasse me. i nailed him for that. All he did was get an Oh S@!T face and look away, and then proceed to try and cut me some slack.
I WIN!

You'll have to call the people in YOUR state to find out what applies and what doesn't.
As for fighting the ticket, heck yes, fight the power. LOL Really, only an idiot pays a ticket w/o first going to court and at least trying to get it reduced. You only loose an hour of your time and it's not like they are going to increase it or anything.

In Illinois you're allowed to go on court supervision which basically says you pay half the fine, and if you don't get another offense in X amount of days, they don't tell your insurance company, and you get no points on your liscense. It worked out well for me with my ticket.
