New Challenger: Corolla T Sport
New Challenger: Corolla T Sport
Looks like Toyota is making a hot hatch themselves overseas to compete against the Civic Type-R, Focus RS, and Golf GTI there.
Here are some key features of the Corolla T Sport:
- 1.8L DOHC VVTL-i engine, 190 hp and 133 ft-lb torque (from Celica GT-S)
- 3 and 5-door configurations
- Upgraded suspension tuning
- 16" light alloy rims
- 6-speed manual transmission
- Brake assist & Electronic brake-force distribution (EBD)
- Vehicle stability control (VSC) & traction control (TCS)
It is reported that the Corolla T Sport will do 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, top speed is 130 MPH, and fuel economy is rated at 34 MPG.
The only problem I see for this car not to come to North America is that they already have that ugly Matrix XRS here. But it looks like Toyota is serious about getting into the youth market with their cars, the market that Honda has dominated since the 90s.

i know everyone hates the matrix but i dont think the XRS looks that bad. if the thing was lowered and the roof line was lower.. it would look 10 times better.
as for the 3-dr hatch... i dontlike how that looks.. not very sporty looking. kinda geo-ish.

I kinda like the matrix myself. I wish I would have taken a look at it before I bought the civc. I don't think I could ultimately drive one though. I think driving a wagon would hurt my self-esteem.
Oh, that corolla looks pretty nice. Even though it closely resembles the si, the subtle differences really make it look a whole lot better.
Yea, they have to go after the young people. Gen Y is huge and is going to be major force in the marketing universe for quite some time.

I read that the T Sport might be released as part of Toyotas Scion lineup next year. If it were priced in the $19k range I'd seriously look at one... I'd still prefer a Type R though, or even the talked about SiR Civic.
We already got those here in Panama, about a month ago...saw the review on a local TV show, very good remarks about it, seen it at the Toyota dealer lot...seen a few on the street....it's ok, I'm impressed by the 1.8L 190BHP, it looks like a mini-minivan....but still looks better than the Si...
and it's like 2k cheaper than the 7thgen civic EX here...
